wow, i still cant believe you two are still trying to convince everyone the answer is 288
and that you still remember what you learned 30 years ago vs what i learned 6 years ago in highschool and 3 years ago in collage lol

22 people on this forum did it wrong except mouse and dan got it right and 2 more, are you serious? i'm glad you two arent doing my taxes :P

you divide the 48 by the 2 i understand, but why the hell would you multiply it by 12 again! you're supposed to divide by it

48/2(9+3)=24/(12)=2
or
48/2(9+3)=48/(18+6)=48/24=2

you forgot where the teach said you can cross out the top and buttom as long as you can divide by the same number?
i will post this again
this paper explains it all, i really dunno what more to say lol

Also I sent this problem to my HS and my College math teachers. When I sent it to them as written in the OP they say I did it right. Also Sam, you can't argue with how I proved I was right, just remove the division.

48 * .5(9+3)

Since division is just the inverse of multiplication, get rid of it. Make it all multiplication. X = 288.

Also, what are you talking about divide it again? Anything outside of parenthesis is automatically known to be multiplied by whats in the parenthesis. In this case, 12.

My calculator must be programed wrong. All 3 of them.

First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
(9+3)=12

Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
48/2=24
24*12=288

Order of operations and inverse operations are two different things that'* why dividing 24 by 12 doesn't work, you have to multiply

Comes down to how the / is handled. however, following the rules is not wrong. LEFT to RIGHT, 48 divided by 2 is 24, 24 times 12 is 288.
