Default 1/25 AMT '59 El Camino

I built this around 2 years ago for a friend of mines son. He received this kit for a birthday gift and after coming over to the house, asked me to build it. The kit is an old mold and is quite crude in quality but I think I managed to work some of the bugs out of it anyways. I didn't do as much research on this car as I usually do with my builds and the avid enthusiast will be able to pick up on that pretty quick but still I'm pretty happy with the turn out. I've just about perfected my painting method on autos and I got ALOT of practice with bare metal foil.

Not being quite my style in regards to how this kid wanted this built I did eventually begin to like the whole lowered "look" of what he wanted. I began my research and found a car that plugged into what he wanted and I set out to lower it even more than what the kit options had and picked up a set of "steelie" wheels with the moon center caps which I used Alclad II chrome on.

After searching on the internet this is the car in which I patterned the build after.

The kit boxing:

The finishing shots:

The interior was pretty tough to work with and presented many challenges but got throught it alriight:

The engine in this kit was TERRIBLE!! No WAY was I going to use any option in it. It had a really bad example of a 348 W motor and an even worse representation of a blown Caddy engine. Having friends on forums pays off because one of my buddies sent me a more accurate and better detailed 348 from a Revell 58' Impala kit which built up nicely:

In the end the kid was really happy with the outcome. I was able to use a "shadowbox" picture frame from Hobby Lobby that I picked up for under $10, had the mirror cut from my glass vendor for free and had the plastic case made for $40 from a local plastic shop.

Thanks CC. I've been doing this kind of stuff on and off for the last 40+ years and have only gotten half decent at it in the last 9 or so. It also helps that the modeling world has some really cool items available that weren't around when I was a kid. If you look closely ....there'* a set of keys on the seat that are on a scratchbuilt key ring.

Thanks man. Once I had all the donor parts from model forum friends it all came together in about 3-4 months.
