New Member from London

Hello,

Just a short introduction. I'm an Australian guy living in London, England. Bought a Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser on E-bay back in 2007 and have made many road trips throughout the U.S. putting on some 20,000 miles.

Like meeting other Oldsmobile owners, especially Custom Cruiser drivers and searching for parts.

Look forward to chatting.

Cheers.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the Forum Fenn!
I like the olds..one of the longest lasting rides I ever owned, was an 81 cutlass LS 4 door.
I had that ride done to the 9's...owned it for 20+ years.
How much is petrol over there now?

Aussiestayover 02-09-2014 01:16 AM

Hello

Hello Art, Soft Ride,

Unleaded petrol/gas costs on average £1.2952 per litre.

The highest reported price on the website below was £ 1.459 per litre.

Super Unleaded or Diesel will be higher.

Check out ... Free UK fuel prices. Over 8,000 petrol stations covered - PetrolPrices.com

A U.S. gallon, different from a U.K gallon = 3.7854 litres.

Therefore, a gallon of regular gas here will cost you at least $ 8.0467

I hope that helps?

I always love coming over to do road trips in the U.S. your gas is soooooo cheap! But people tend not to believe me when I tell them.

Cheers,

Soft Ride 02-09-2014 02:03 AM

Fenn thanks for the reply.
I am in Canada, West Coast, and our fuel is at about $1.43 per litre here. $5.50 per us gallon I guess..
We just had some guests here from England, and it was nice to see them again. Have not seen the pounds lately until they showed up. As currency value goes up, so does bill size LOL. Have you seen our new polymer currency?

Aussiestayover 02-09-2014 03:22 AM

Hi,

I guess by 'polymer currency' you mean plastic notes instead of paper?

Australia has much the same thing. You can even put it through the clothes washing machine, no problem, or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

England still has paper....

Soft Ride 02-09-2014 03:27 AM

Yes plastic notes..London is in polymer testing as well & will have some soon as well.
Here is a topic thread I started a while ago..

Aussiestayover 02-09-2014 03:55 AM

I guess that's the way to go.

The U.S. currency in my humble opinion should produce bank notes in different sizes and colours. Small denominations smaller etc. Much easier to see what you have and I'm sure people with limited eye sight would appreciate it.

Of course in 20 years we will all be using our mobile phones with a bank app and little notes or coins will be in circulation... o.k. well may be 40 years?

Soft Ride 02-09-2014 05:08 AM

Possibly, but one bad solar flare could end all of that LOL.

my mom had a 88 or 89 olds cierra custom cruiser brougham, back then olds had the worst naming strategy. the cierras had changed to the round style, it was a really nice car for the day, most things were still square and the 3800 in that light of a car was quick as heck. i was in school and took my driver test in that. it still had the fold up third row you could fit a bunch of kids in it, i have memories of my buddy mooning unsuspecting followers.

Aussiestayover 02-09-2014 08:48 AM

I was in Los Angeles recently visiting friends and people older than me wanted to get the the rear facing seat in the restaurant car park to rekindle past memories. Mooning was never mentioned!

jwfirebird 02-09-2014 08:55 AM

i guess your memories may vary, lol.

wagons were always cooler than minivans though. and the big ones fit more. the neighbor had a torino wagon you could fit like 20 kids in that

Cruzeguy17 02-09-2014 01:08 PM

Welcome to the forum, Fenn! That's a VERY nice Oldsmobile you have! I love seeing those old-school classics!

Aussiestayover 02-09-2014 02:00 PM

Hello Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your welcome.

My Oldsmobile sits in storage for 11 months of the year. Sometimes longer :(

Luckily its dry and warm so little chance of rust taking over...I hope.

Now just over 51,000 miles.

I wish I could find cheap insurance. I've been advised as its my only car in the U.S. and I drive it to Car shows etc AND the grocery store when I'm there it can't be on classic car cover with an agreed value. Grrrrr...

I love the classics too apart from the weak engine (a 307) and parts issues.

Cheers.

jwfirebird 02-09-2014 06:03 PM

what state is it in? there are states were insurance is optional. i just got classic for mine because here in NY it has to be at least 25, so an 88 would be good this year, but you still have to provide proof of other driver, locked garage, etc

Soft Ride 02-10-2014 04:37 AM

I noticed you were successful in creating an album, very nice!

Insurance

Hi jwfirebird,

Its in Wisconsin. I do seem to have a problem with insurance. I guess its because I don't live in the U.S.

In August my wagon will be 26 years old.

I do now have a U.S. driving licence although they only allowed it to remain valid for as long as my visa (3 months) so it ended last month.

I've been advised that as I use the wagon as my sole method of transport when in the U.S. it can't be put on a Classic Car policy as those are only for those driven to shows or car club meetings. I drive it to the grocery store, shopping, sight seeing, etc. Access to another car is I think an issue which I don't have.

My frustration is I only drive it three weeks a year if that. Otherwise its covered and locked away in a garage.

Also, my current policy doesn't have an agreed value so if the wagon is destroyed or damaged chances are the insurance company will write it off.

Lastly, I also pay around $ 1,000.00 a year for the policy which I think is expensive.

Can you recommend any nationwide insurance broker or policy?

Cheers.

jwfirebird 02-10-2014 07:36 AM

my agreed value policy is through grundy worldwide and they have no mileage requirements and if you go on a road trip with it you are still covered. like i said though they made me send in pics of the garage and proof of other cars for both myself and my wife. 1000 seems real high though. i dont think i pay that for all 4 of my cars and our bonnie and monte have full coverage. the others are through new york central mutual. you know anyone in Tennessee or any place that doesnt require insurance? all you need is an address there to forward you the mail, if you do get insurance those places are alot cheaper.

Aussiestayover 02-10-2014 10:51 AM

Ah thanks, No I don't have friends in those states.

I think the stumbling block is I don't have another car to drive when I am in the U.S.

My Oldsmobile is my ONLY car and it doesn't appear to matter to the insurance company that its only driven for 3 weeks a year.

all they car about is their money for sure
