New 2002 SSEi owner

Just bought myself an 02 SSEi w/ 80k about 2 hours ago. It's dark blue with a dark grey leather interior (don't know the official colors yet). Mechanically, it seems pretty solid. Got a slight vibration at highway speeds, but it needs new tires so I'm hoping that helps a bit. Was originally a GM exec lease unit, and the guy I bought it from was the second owner. Dealer serviced and maintained. Great condition overall (of course it's not perfect, but what used car is?) It's loaded with every option if I'm not mistaken. Only thing that doesn't work is the driver's seat heater. 3 of the window motors have been replaced under warranty. One of the speakers in the door panels up front seems to be blown (Monsoon system) so I'll probably have to find a new speaker for that.

I'll be lurking and posting here and there. I've been a member on 2 other car forums (for my Lincoln Mark VIII and Chevy Trailblazer) so I know the abundance of useful info and help that can be found on these boards.

Welcome! I just traded in my '06 Trailblazer last week on my '02 Bonneville. I am guessing you were/are a member over on Trailvoy.com?

You got it. I got rid of my 06 TB, but also have a 06 Buick Rainier V8. Haven't really posted there in a while though.

Welcome to the Bonneville Forum.

Thanks guys. I gotta admit, the first time I pegged it and heard the whine, it put a smile on my face. Not quite as fast as my Mark VIII was, but it's nicer so I can deal. I won't be doing too much modding to it, but am up for the simple stuff (CAI, possibly pulley) as long as the wife doesn't mind too much.

Danthurs 04-27-2009 09:33 PM

If only it was that simple. I swear, just one or two mods, and that's it. I said that about 20 mods ago.

Did you get rid of the TB for the Bonne? If you did that is pretty funny.. both of us got rid of an 06 TB for an 02 Bon.

Anyways, I saw you said the first time you hit it and heard the supercharger whine it put a smile on your face... wish mine was SC. lol

Still put a smile on my face when I hit it the first time.. I have owned several LT1 and LS1 F-bodies but after driving a HEAVY SUV with a high reving I6 for the past year the torquey 3800 motor still puts a little smile on my face.. plus the DIC showing 30+mpg on the hwy DEFINATELY puts a smile on my face haha.

Anyways good luck with the car.. make sure to post some pictures!

Famous last words...start convincing her now that modding the car is the right thing to do and she might go easy on you when you buy and HP tuner, pull the SC and port and polish it, port and polish the LIM, add an intercooler, buy bigger tires for traction...... :D

Danthurs 04-27-2009 09:42 PM

Now, who might you be talking about?

That would be you now...me in the near future! :D

Ok, ya, the wife did grumble a little bit about the intercooler. She grumbling about the Hoosier slicks too, and those arn't even on the car yet. But I swear, I only have 3 more MODs to go, then I'm done.

rmac694203 04-27-2009 09:58 PM

Haha, you guys might be right. But for now, I'm sticking with my 'no major mods for now' stance....for now.

Danthurs 04-27-2009 10:01 PM

I'm writing this down.

I need to worry about tires and that dang crackling speaker first.

Now, to go 255 or stay with 235....hmm....

Go big...or go home! :D

Danthurs 04-27-2009 10:06 PM

255 no. You will have rubbing problems. 245 should be OK. Some have rubbing problems with 245 and others do not. I'm running 245 on my car with no rubbing. The off set of the wheels will determine how close you get.

rmac694203 04-27-2009 10:12 PM

Oh, I thought a few others had said they ran 255 with no problems. I don't really know if I want to change the overall diameter of my tires by going with the 245 though. 245/55 and I'm bigger, 245/50 and I'm smaller, correct?

Maybe just stick with stock and save the speedo being off. Although, when I put 245/50 16s on my Mark VIII (stock is 225/60 16) it didn't bother me much.

What tires are you running? I'll probably order from Tire Rack or Discount Tires and have them mounted locally. Hoping to get rid of my slight vibration. There are quite a few local shops w/ road force balancing available so I'll start with that.

Danthurs 04-27-2009 10:19 PM

I went with a slightly smaller then stock tire. I went from 235/60/16 to a 245/45/17. With my wheel off set I could get a 255 on with rubbing. Like I said, it really depends on the off set.

rmac694203 04-27-2009 10:27 PM

Oh well I've got the stock 17" chrome wheels. I might just keep it simple and go w/ the 235s and save any trouble.

Danthurs 04-27-2009 10:32 PM

With a mostly stock engine 235 will be OK, but you will still spin them. Mine I can spin my 245 right up to 50 mph. I want wider tires. For the track I'm running slicks. Got a set of drag radials on the rack, just need to get them on the car. My fire hawks simply don't have the grip
