2007 Yukon burning oil
Hello everyone, this is my first GM product and maybe my last. The issue that I am having is that the engine is burning oil. Started at a little over 26k and I have taken it to 2 different dealerships. They each say that to keep an eye on it. Well, now I have 34k and its now burning a quart of oil every 500 miles. To add to the problem, my dealer just got its franchise taken away, Next closest dealer is 1 1/2 hour away. GM is now doing an oil consumption test and when it is low I am supposed to bring it in. However, the GM rep says it will not take responsability if something was to happen to the motor by driving it to the dealership with low oil. They will not pay for a tow either. GM says that burning a quart of oil every 100k is normal. I say ballony. My ford has over 176k on it and it doesnt burn oil. My question is: Is this normal?

not normal at all. all motors will use some oil over time but not at that rate. have you looked around the exterior of the motor for signs of where the leak is?

Some oil will burn, expect to see about 1 quart low after 3000 to 5000 miles. But 1 quart in 500 miles, that'* extreme. Can you smell oil in the exhaust? After the truck has sat for the night, do you see a poof of bluish smoke, perhaps smell a little oil? If so, the valve seals are leaking, but with such low miles I don't expect that to be the case. Another place to look is around the valve covers. Do you see any buildup right below where the cover meets the head? Leaking valve covers is what I would be looking at. If there was work done on the engine someone may have put a lot of weight on the valve cover and compressed the valve cover gasket.

This is definitely not a normal nor common problem. As was mentioned, someone may have done some work on the car and put some weight on the valve cover if its leaking.

We bought the SUV brand new. There has been no work done on the engine at all. I meant to say that GM says 1 qt every thousand miles is normal and within spec. None of the 3 dealerships found any leaks at all and the new dealership added some dye to the oil to see if there was one. We brought the vehicle home from the dealer which put about 100 miles on it and I checked the oil, looks like it might be about 1/4 to 1/2 qt low. There is no smell, smoke or any puff of white or blue smoke upon a cold start up at all. I am seriously considering trading in the vehicle due to all the inconvenience that GM is giving us. Their plan is to bring it in check the oil level and change the oil. Do this about 6 times and see what GM does. The cost of each oil change is $47 and about 1/2 of gas there and back. GM says its on me for those costs which seems very unfair to me, but I guess I have to see it from their point of view.

With 34k on it, everything should be under warranty, no exceptions. If they tried that on me, I'd be phoning up corporate and the office of the president/consumer affairs and demanding that the problem be resolved, even if the mechanic himself has to drive it to and from work.
They are deliberately price gouging you and ripping you off. There is absolutely NO purpose for changing the oil in order to check for leaks or oil burning. If the oil level is low and you did nothing, then forcing you to get an oil change is flat out stupid. Nobody should have to go through this to get their car fixed. I would highly recommend you call corporate affairs/community relations, tell them about your problem, and make sure that *they* handle the repair and resolution of the problem you're having with your vehicle. They will stay in contact with the dealer every step of the way. You should then be refunded any money you've paid them for any service related to this problem since they obviously can't do it right the first time.
