#14632: Auto trans. shifter solenoid may prevent complete shut off (Cobalt/G5/HHR)
Pontiac, despite being dead, sent me another letter today about a new problem with my ignition key system.
This isn't a full-blown recall (maybe just a TSB), so information is hard to come by. All I can find out is that about 3-4% of affected model years' Cobalts, G5'*, and HHR'* may have this problem.
As it'* not a true recall, GM is telling owners to not bother having it serviced unless it'* having the problem. Affected vehicles will be fixed until their fifteenth birthday.
The usual what-you-should-do and reimbursement paragraphs follow, and a reimbursement form is included.

This letter is intended to make you aware that your vehicle'* transmission shifter may not properly transmit an electrical signal that allows the ignition key to be turned counter clockwise past the accessory mode to the "LOCK" position after the vehicle has been shifted into park. If this occurs, the ignition key cannot be removed from the ignition cylinder without depressing the manual release plunger located on the underside of the steering column as described in the owner'* manual. A key left in the accessory position for an extended period of time may result in severe battery drain and a possible no start condition.
Do not take your vehicle to your General Motors dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.
What We Have Done: General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for the condition described above. If this condition occurs on your 2007 Pontiac G5 within 15 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of vehicle mileage or ownership, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the condition described above is not covered under this special coverage program.

Had the same problem with my 2007 Saturn Ion
I had this same problem with my 2007 Saturn Ion in 2013. I did not receive the letter from GM until Dec. 2014, so I didn't take it to a dealer to be repaired in 2013, but to my mechanic (Certified mechanic).
I filled out the reimbursement form and sent in all receipts and work orders. Will I still get reimbursed the $566 it cost me to repair it, even if I did not take it to a dealer in 2013? I think I should, because how was I supposed to know then that this was a "recall" or extended warranty problem?

Well,
I don't think you will get all your money back......you will get established GM labor times......
One hour to diagnose? Maybe 0.5, but no way two hours to install a shifter....list is around $223......so you should get a good chunk back, but not all....
From what I read, the plastic stem in the shifter has a small metal rod on the end, that pushes a switch....when the rod breaks, the pin can't make contact with the switch(when you shift into park), which sends power to the lock solenoid for your key......

14632 recall
I took my 2006 to chev.to a dealer to check problem and was charged 100.00+ for them to tell me it was going to cost 500.00 more to repair it,needless to say I said goodby and why was I going to buy another Chevrolet ? Then 6mos. later I got the recall letter,then went back to dealer and have been told they don't know how long it will take to get the part because of back log.
