I've talked to a lot of GM car owners and they don't like the DRL system. I was wondering why the Hell doesn't GM just make this optional, everybody doesn't want DRL I know I don't! Or they could just have a switch to turn if off, In bonnevilles I thought you could just turn the twilight sentenal off and that would be it! when I go get a newer car I'm going to demand them to disable it or NO SALE!

Federal regulations, and it was actually required in Canada before it was in the US.

DRL was decent safety feature, simliar to the 3rd brake light. The DRL can get irritating, but I think the pros outweigh the cons.

Are they really required by U.*. _law_? I could swear that GM had them while other manufacturers did not. (Some did, some didn't, within the same manufacturing year.)

As for me, I like them. Anything that will help prevent idiots from pulling out in front of me is fine by me.

I know this topic provokes flamewars, but what exactly is the problem here? Has anyone noticed that there are also _red_ lights on the _back_ of the car that light up when you step on the brake, whether you want them to or not? Why are you wanting to disable the white lights in front but not the red ones in back?

And if they do come on when the sun starts to go down, I can turn the twilight **** to "OFF" and all the lights go out. Am I alone here?

Well. look in the techinfo.. there'* 2 way of going around the DRL problem.. but again.. it'* by law due to a few dumb idiots that gets into head on collision in cloudy days , and blaming that it would've been much safer if they had it on at all times. However, my question is I like the way the PT Looser ( Cruiser ) has the daytime running lights on as the marker lights instead.. is there a way we can do that with ours ?? And wat is the specific law pertaining to DRL'*? Since technically.. it'* not the headlights, but yet manufactured like that ( again referring to the the marker lights ) ?? The last thing I want to waster everyones time and $$ just to have some A$$hole cop give me a ticket for it.

On another note... my Twilight sentinel switch won't turn off the lights and markers if I'm in drive. :?

Mine do the same thing. I know even for some years there is a way to disable them thru a sensor or some part under the hood. The twilight **** with the OFF feature was only available in the early to mid 90'* models.

I don't mind the third brake light. I think it is a good idea. What I don't like is the idea of not having complete control of the front lights. I am one of those drivers who wants to control everything and let the computer control nothing. If I need them on I will turn them but if a driver can't see a 3500lb+, 15ft+ car on the road a small 12v light won't help too much. :?

I agree with SSEi95, I like to have control. I don't need a computer to wipe me when I am done using the toilet--and I don't need a computer to tell me when I need to use my headlights. Fortunately my '95 SE/SC doesn't have the daytime runners or the sentinel. It is simply a pull-on/push-off with the dash dimmer. There is something to be said about simplicity.

Well, yeah; in fact the DRL system doesn't _have_ a computer as far as I know.

It does have a kind of horseshoe-shaped ceramic resistor mounted inside the left front fender which provides the voltage drop for the reduced power to the headlamps, for those owners who are really having a cow over this and feel the need to unplug the DRLs without losing their headlamps altogether.
