Computer Help Please?
Dear Enthusiasts,
I know we have had differences in opinions before, however, I was wondering if you could help with a computer problem we have. I know that some of you are in the computer field, so here goes:
My dad bought two computers for work and had the outdated home come computer networked at work. Today, his computer, the main one, blew up.
The hard drive was okay, but all info will have to be transferred.
(the following is the quote of what we will need from the manufacturer)
1 replacement pack pro Intel
1 PC133 32x64 256MB SDRAM
1 ECS P4S5A/DX + SIS 645 478 PIN w/533 FSB 2DDR-333/2SDR, LAN,USB 2.0
1 *NO OS
1 3.5 floppy
1 Integrated 10/100 NIC
1 Conexant V.90 56K PCI Fax/Modem
1 AC97 Stereo Audio
1 Pentium 4 2.40 B GHz/478pin w/512K cache533MHz FSB
1 40GB 5400rpm HDD
1 Linkworld B312 case w/250w PS
1 nVidia GeForce2 MX-400 64MB SDR AGP
1 Aopen 40x12x48 CRW4048 OEM w/Justlink
I need to know - Is this a good setup? Are these good components? If not, what are good components? Also, what are good Surge protecters/UPS, etc.
Finally, What are good computers in general?
I'm sorry, I don't much about computers so I can't say what'* what?
Thanks.

I appreciate your input - Actually, after I posted this message, I talked to a friend of mine, and he told me what components to request. - They are building a brand new computer and these were the components that were quoted. Thanks again for the quick assistance.

Glad you got it worked out. I kept my mouth shut due to my biased opinion.....I work for the #2 PC maker. Didn't want you to be pressured by my sales pitch, as it'* irresistable. I'm that good.

In answer to the original question though, yes, those are fine for a home user such as yourself. If you were a big gamer I'd recommend some more powerful stuff, but for you they should do just fine.
The best surge/UPS manufacturer is APC. They guarantee all their products so if you fry equipment, they'll replace it.

omg
Do not buy an ECS motherboard. They make the cheapest boards around. Also, I don't know why you would get sdram with a p4. Pentium 4'* are made to run with DDR ram or even better RDRAM.

I didn't see the CD-RW drive listed in his list
Regardless, my dad just bought a new computer, and, yes, it came with a cable modem because we had to exchange it for a regular phone line modem (can't get cable in the area i live :( ) So I figured most come with one now. Then again maybe Canadians are the only lucky ones who do.
