went car shopping today
 

well I was out shopping today and i stopped by a local car dealer. They had a 1992 Buick Park Avenue for sale so I thought I would take it for a test drive. The car is loaded with all the goodies including a moonroof. :D The car has 192,000 miles on it and they are asking $3600 for it. I asked them if they would take my 89 Bonneville for trade and he said he would with an additional 2000 cash. What's everyone's thoughts on this car. I know it's not a Bonneville but it still has the famous 3800 engine and drivetrain and that's all that really matters to me.

Dood your getting ripped, there is a loaded PA in town here for 1600 and it has only 168k. Its a 93 but has a tiny and I mean tiny bit of rust on the rockers... I would try and work the price a little bit..

Although she is a bit old...if I didnt already have my LSS, I'd check into it. She looks like a beauty...and is in your $$ ballpark.

Everywhere I look there are these cars that are selling for a lot mroe than mine but i still have mine!?? Mine is a 1995 Bonnie with 145k miles on it..and comes to $3000 US

192k miles is 307k kms here :shock: and $3600 US is $4,800 canadian :shock:

So almost $5k for a car that is 11 years old with 307,000 on it is absolutely RIDICULOUS...

yeah i figured $3600 was way to much. I'm gonna wait until tommorrow and test drive a 93 Bonneville anyways. I like the Bonnevilles much more than the Park Avenues.

If I was you..I'd look into it. For the kind of money that you are talking about....a decent car is hard to find.

Just do what my husband and I did, no matter what car you get. We were buying our new Bonnie and trading in our old GP (it was a '94 with 215,000 miles on it). The dealer said that she'd give us $2000.00 for the trade in, and then, when we tried to talk her down on the price of the Bonnie, she stated that the trade in value was their way of reducing the price, since the GP was worthless :roll: . She said they'd just send it to the scrapyard, so we asked why we couldn't just take the trade in value and keep the GP. She didn't know what to say! :lol: She just stumbled over her words for a few seconds and then said, "well, I guess we could do that"

I wish I had got my salesman to say that when I was buying my Bonneville, cept he would backtracked faster than can be imagined. He gave me a grand for my car and acted like it was the worst deal ever. It was decent had some front end damage but ran like a new car (I seen the new owner driving around today, she drove it like a grandma. Its a '91 grand am quad 4...talk about performance on a budget).

Dealerships tend to do that just to make a sale but used dealers will actually sell it regardless. Althought sometimes the same dealership will own higher end lot and then a low end one that they send most of their trade-ins to.

Not necessarily, these high mileage, junk trade-ins are essentially just that..junk. Since any dealers have zero investment in these old wrecks, they are usually disposed of by auction.

These derelicts are likely only going to bring a couple of hundred dollars on the block....as we used to say " McDonald's money".

There is such a huge liability issue relative to the little profit value these old traps generate, that most dealerships would rather wholesale it than put up with the aftermath of a bad retail sale.

Trading these things is useful for only two things...a downpayment..or geting rid of them. I let my 245,000 mile '95 Royale go for about $800 just to get rid of it. The dealer resold it to a taxi company "as is" for about $500.00.

Yah, but the point remains that they sold it...you keeping the car would have been a loss for them. And me keeping my car was a definate gain for me (I gave it to a friend who was having car trouble, and she ran it for about six months before selling it to another friend of ours for $300.00...a steal since the CD changer we left in there was worth that). It would still be running now if he had a little money to put into it (it needs rear struts, brake pads, and some alternator work). The car would be worth it IMO because even with the high milage, the transmission is perfect and the engine runs great (I had been meaning to test the compression before my friend needed it, I'm willing to bet it's pretty high). Even the body is in pretty good shape (no rust except where we had a little accident :oops: that scraped the left rear a little). Now I think he's going to part it out...it's too bad; if we had room to store it we'd keep it...sentimental attachment. :lol:
