Default Learning to rebuild a trans

I've had a trans sitting here for nearly a year, got a good deal on it and figured I'd get to it some day. Well, today was that day.

Got it mounted on the stand and started removing the side cover.

Hmm, what have we hear? a trans from a 98 with a 4th gear clutch shaft with 09/27/04 date on it. Looks like this trans has been repaired with a new hardened clutch shaft.

Go, Dan, go! I'm dying to do an automatic, and since mine is nearing 200K I'm thinking of buying a donor to rebuild before mine goes.

It'* really not all that hard. Having the engine stand and the bracket I made, thanks to billboost for that idea, and a few tools, it'* rather a easy job. Get a trans service manual, big help there. Just wear rubber gloves and keep everything real clean. I plan to put this one back together, then rip it down again, and do this several times.

Not bad! I could give myself a new transmission, if I only I had the: space, stand, tools, manual, donor transmission, jack stands, lift…

Best of luck on your rebuild!

Dan, when you rebuild this trans, make sure that you tighten the clutch clearance in the 2nd and 3rd clutch. GM does not give a spec for this, but we use 1 or 2 oversized steels for the 2nd clutch and use a few early 440-T4 3rd clutches to tighten things up in the 3rd clutch.
