Traction Control Project

Hey guys. I went to the JY yesterday and found 3 Bonnevilles. I picked up some things for the interior, including one of these:

It got me thinking, my car has the wiring/plug for TC, maybe there's a way to get it to work...
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3951/1021001438.jpg

So I plugged it in.

When I start the car, the button lights up. That's all. I've never noticed a light on the dash for TC either (Then again, I've never really looked for it since I knew the car didn't come with it). So, is there a way to get Traction Control working or am I just dreaming here? Perhaps a different BCM or PCM? Maybe a fuse is needed somewhere? I don't know much about TC, so I thought I'd ask here before I go back for more parts tomorrow. I've got to take my dad to get some things for his car.

Look on your wheel hub. Is there a wire coming out of it? If not, you have no WSS and that means no traction control.

There are wires leading to the wheel hubs. All four of them, if I'm not mistaken. I'll check for sure tomorrow morning.

Dan, even if he did have wires going to the hubs, he could still have ABS. Just like my 95, it had ABS, but no T/C.

And to be honest, I have no idea where/if/whatever if there is a module for the T/C.

Mike 10-22-2010 06:27 AM

After looking in the 95 service manual, the T/C module is built into the ABS module. Now there are 2 different modules according to Rockauto. Ones that only have ABS and ones that have ABS and TC.

So, you would need to upgrade the ABS module to a ABS/TC model in order to get TC.

That makes sense. If I'm looking at the right parts, they are well out of my price range. Could you give me an idea of where the module is located? I might be able to grab the one from the car I got the TC switch from.

Mike 10-22-2010 07:39 PM

It would be located on the drivers side strut tower. It's a silver looking box. Dang it, I thought I had a pic somewhere.

But, I'm not sure what else may be needed for T/C to work.

Somethings gotta be wired into the trans doesnt it? or the motor in some sort Isnt the trac control just torque management that basically bogs it down when the tires starts slipping. So that box would have a plug or something to go wherever it goes lol im really just kind of spitballing....never messed with trac control

I was thinking it was a combination of the abs pump and pulling timing. When ever the traction control engaged on my dad's PAU you can hear the abs pump whizzing away :D

GXP Venom 10-22-2010 11:21 PM

Definitely pulls timing and in Northstars, fuel (not sure of the 3800's). I don't know if the TC software is in all PCM/TCM's regardless of which modules you have. Guess the best way to tell would be to activate and try to spin on a dirt road. Personally, I don't like it. Like ABS, Wish it wasn't on mine.

anathema05 10-22-2010 11:57 PM

Is this it?

I was wondering about the PCM programming too. There is a light in the dash for TC, just never comes on because its "disabled". I'm thinking either the ABS module, a fuse / relay, or PCM / BCM. Or maybe even a combination of those. Just need to find the right pieces to enable it. But if it doesn't work out, I still tried right?

sseidriver97 10-23-2010 12:30 AM

that appears to be a windsheild wiper motor

anathema05 10-23-2010 12:32 AM

Ahh, you're right. I took a picture of the wrong thing. My mistake.

sseidriver97 10-23-2010 12:36 AM

lol its okay we all make mistakes.....

anathema05 10-23-2010 12:47 AM

I'll get the right pic up tomorrow. Obviously I need some sleep. :bcoffee:

sseidriver97 10-23-2010 12:50 AM

LOL yeah well you get your beauty sleep and we will see you all rested up tomorrow lol

OK, I went back to the JY this morning with my dad. While he was getting stuff for his car, I ran back to take a look at the Bonnie I got the button from. There were a lot of parts missing so I got a clear look at the ABS unit. It had a sticker on it that said "ABS-5/TCS/Blah/Blah". TCS meaning Traction Control System, I assume. We didn't have time to pull the module but I'm going to have a look at mine later and see if, by chance, it already has a TCS module in it.

anathema05 10-23-2010 11:37 AM

...and it's a no. Looks like I'll have to go back for the module.

sseidriver97 10-23-2010 12:34 PM

well at least you now know you dont have it

anathema05 10-24-2010 09:40 PM

I found some used modules on ebay for fairly cheap.

I'll be giving the JY a call to ask what they want for the one they have.

Will update again if/when I get my hands on one.

my car has the same connectors in it although attached to the 6plug connector there was also a 4 plug connector, what could this control and if I wanted to hook up a abs/tcs would all I need is a module and connect everything or is there more complex procedures to this?

I believe you're referring to the connector for the air shock firmness buttons (ie. performance, etc). I don't know much about those because I've never had them.

AFAIK, what we need to do is find an ABS unit like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/96-99...Q5fAccessories. Install that, plug in the button for it, and it's done. However, I'm not sure if the PCM controls traction at all, so I don't know if it would need to be replaced/upgraded as well. A 95 might be a little different from my 98, but not by much.
