There goes my weekend....wheels
Does anyone have advice on how to get a rounded (mostly) lug nut off? Besides setting the car on fire? :x
Thanks! |
well I know sears has this kit of sockets that removes rounded off nuts and bolts. I have a set and really don't know what I would do without it sometimes! I forget exactly what they call the set tho.
Edit: They're called Bolt-Out and they sell different sizes there in sets. Each set is about $20 |
get a socket that doesn't quite fit. pound it over the lug, unscrew lug.
Pound socket off, return to store for a new on if it has a life time warrenty |
I tried the different size sockets by pounding them on. Tried for 45 minutes. Looks like I'll have to drive around with 2 chrome rims and two crap rims until I fix this. I'll have to check out this kit you're talking about WJC. Would AA or Pepboys have something like this?

Yes a autopart store might have it.

Thanks guys. I'm going to be a ricer for the next hour while I drive around with two nice rims.

I'm thinking that AA would, but never been to a pepboys before, so no idea on that.

We used to use 'Nut Busters' that would actually crack the nut in half. I haven't seen one in years though and now that I rotate my own tires I haven't needed one. I don't think they would fit in many rims anymore. If you're working in a tight pace (recessed nuts) you might have to drill soome holes thru the nuts (parallel tot he stud) and use a cold chisel to see if you can crack them off that way. Good luck.

Pliers???

Pliers... let me grab the needle nose, that should do it! :)
I originally was thinking of trying to break the lug. But I went to AA and found the kit made by IRWIN. It took a bit of time, but I eventually got it off. My saving grace was the fact that I got a 3-ton jack on my way home. The lug nut still would not come off even with the special socket. I had to use the long handle from the jack I just bought which gave me enough leverage to get it off. If I didn't just get that jack I don't know where I'd be right now. It's the small things that make me happy. But it's also the small things like this that get me t'd off and put me in a bad mood sometimes. I got some locking lugs to stop the thieves, and some OE replacements in case any get rounded off again. |
