I bought my 02 Bonneville about a week and a half ago now. When I was buying it I bought a GMPP Major Guard extended warranty. But today I had some issues canceled it. First the dealer told it was going to cost $1820 for a 4year 48k mile warranty. When I shopped it on the net with some discount sites for GM warranties they sell the same warranty for $1700 with a zero deductible. This warranty wholeseller said the dealers price was pretty good because they can make them up as much as they want. My dealer told me they would sell me the warranty for cost if I bought it from them with the car.

To be eligible for Major Guard I had to buy it from the selling dealer at the time of sell because all factory warranty'* where expired. Well the dealer informed me at the time of sell that price they quoted me was with a $100 deductible. So I ask how much more for it with no deductible. They said $1920 it was another $100 dollars more. So I agreed to pay it. Well I get a letter from GM the other day saying My car isn't eligible for the warranty. I called the dealer about it the day I got the letter. They said they would check into it. Today I spoke with them again and what they said was the car is eligible for the warranty but for the mileage(17K) and year(2002) it wasn't eligible for a zero deducible that it would have a $50 deducible instead. I got a little and said that I shopped it on the net and it showed it was available before I even bought it from them. That I also shopped some aftermarket warranty'* as well and they could just give me my $1920 back and I'll go buy from someone who knows more about what they sell.

The bad news is if I do buy a warranty it will have to be an aftermarket one at this point. I wonder if I even should. Right now this is what I know that needs to get looked at. The passenger door speaker needs replace I can do this myself of course with something aftermarket.and this thread I did http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...ic.php?t=72521. The car is in like new condition and I just wonder if I should just put the money back in the bank.

My 1995 Bonneville had no problems until 130K and that was the uim. If this car is anything like that one it will be a wast of money to buy one. I just wanted some protection but know I don't even know if I should worry about getting one.

I wouldn't buy the warranty. I've never owned a vehicle warranty other than what a car comes with 3/36,000.

I buy a particular car because of it'* reputation and my driving habits. Right now, that'* why I have a Bonneville and Honda Civic. Laugh all you want at the Civic, but they're BOTH VERY reliable cars. Therefore, no warranty will ever be put on either car.

Ditch the warranty and stuff the $1,920 back in your bank and let it create interest.

First of all, I don't understand why the dealer is charging so much. I bought my 03 SSEi last August w/ 20k miles and a 2 yr warranty cost me $700. A couple of weeks after picking it up, I had the RF window regulator replaced. (A $500 cost at a Pontiac dealer) Also had the steering shaft lubed once already too.
I am in favor of warranties.
I would rather get some things fixed under warranty before I pay.

Unless you have a couple thousand laying around for when you may need a new transmission or other repairs, get the warranty. Those that don't need warranties are the ones that make very good money and can afford anything they need. I can't afford things like that and my warranty has already put a different engine in my car with the transmisson not far behind.

So with around $2500 for an engine replacement and $2500+ for a tranny replacement, i would say never buy a car without a warranty. My warranty was $1200 and it already payed for itself twice with the engine replacement.

Word of caution, read all the fine print and find out EXACTLY what is coverred by the extended warranty. MY father in law was a serivce writer at a large dealership and said that there is alot of stuff those extended and aftermarket warranties don't cover.

Who is the aftermarket warranty company? If it is Great Lakes Warranty Co. tell them they're taking the car back. Don't deal with any company that deals with Great Lakes. They're scum.
Unfortunately, most aftermarket warranty companies are about the same caliber. They wiil fight paying your claim every step of the way. Better to skip it.

Sorry to bring this back up, I just wanted to update everyone with the outcome

I got the dealer to reinstate the GM major guard warranty I was buying with it when I purchased it, It will have a $50 deductible though. Originally there wasn't supposed to be one. That'* why I got mad about it and canceled it. I still need to get the steering gear replaced so with this warranty I can get my local dealer (who diagnosed it bad) to fix it. This saves me two trips out of state to get it fixed, a $50 deductible will be cheaper than the gas it'll cost to go back to where I bought it (they would have covered it under the 30 day temporary warranty I got with it).
