One of my gripes with Carfax is they only have a record if it was reported. Most repair shops don't report to them. Lots of small accidents don't get reported.
My 97 SSEi for example is spotless on carfax. Yet..the drivers door has been replaced and much of the car looks like it was repainted. Makes a guy say Hmmmmmm

Bought a 2005 F-250 on Ebay. Car checked out flawless on Carfax. One owner, Texas truck. Paid for it and flew to Texas to pick it up. Knew I was in trouble. Truck looked great but I knew something was very wrong. Ended up being completely rusted everywhere except the outside shell. The refurber did a great job buffing the paint and replacing the floor mat with a new mat (he had to pull out the bench seat to pull out the mat). This truck was in a flood and sat in the flood for a very long time. Under the dash was a ton of silt, under the hood was a rusted mess. The ebay dealer knew just what pictures to take to show off the good and hide the bad.
Ended up being a fleet vehicle owned by Kerr McGee corporation. They are self insured so no insurance claims. Truck was sold at auction and was fixed up to trick someone. Seller on Ebay had a good rating, but ended up rating was a fraud.
Lesson learned- Carfax is a tool, not a fact. Also, that there are independent car insoectors all over the country (wish I would have known this).
How I got out of this- bought a replacement truck and traded this truck into the dealer with full disclosure on my part. Lost about 6k

well I took my car to my mechanic and this is what he found:
Manifold is seeping oil.
Power steering pump and fluid is seeping needs a new steering pump
Needs a Tune up for 156K
Oil pan gasket is seeping oil
Some kind of small exhaust leak
Power steeting fluid needs to be flushed
Needs a new rear end strut
Front wheel Alignment
But thats about it nothing that is a deal breaker...but it is gonna cost me about 1000 to fix it all. But for a 156K car he says its not that bad a shape and I got a good deal on the car for the mustang trade.
So what do you all think is these things bad or what considering its a 01 with 156K

What is the price on the Bonneville? How is the price you are paying compare with what Edmunds.com says it is worth. I am a cheap SOB and never pay more than what the dealer will pay for it according to Edmunds unless I know something very special (like one owner driven by Grandpa),
Go to the sell your car/ appraise your car section from Edmunds home page:
I did a quick check on Edmunds for a 2201 SSEi with all options and 160k in average shape, they state dealer trade in is $2024, private part is $3052 and dealer retail is $4200. Per Edmunds, the car loses $1300 per mileage and $1100 because of average condition- which makes sense because you came up with $1000 in repairs.
