I keep hearing it, but have no clue what it stands for or what it does.

MAF = Mass Airflow Sensor

Monitors the air going into your engine, so you can get the proper air/fuel raito (mix).

(Gurus as always.... correct me if I'm wrong...)

MAF = Mass Air Flow

It is the sensor that is in the throttle body that monitors the air coming into the engine.

I guess you mean the MAF screen. If I'm not mistaken it'* Mass Air Flow. But it keeps the incoming air into the TB laminar, or straight through without turbulence (though the accordian tube produces some) It'* there to provide accurate readings from the MAF sensor.

Some have removed it, and with a smooth pipe intake with a cone filter, or gutted airbox, the removal of it can benefit performance.

More info should be in techinfo somewhere.
