It'll kill your MAF sensor. Other than that, you should be okay. I wouldn't see a use for it, however. You don't have a carb, so spraying it in the intake will do nothing to help start the car and have her run on her own. All in all, it would just be a waste.

When you use starting fluid in a carbbed engine, that will help get the fuel flowing in the car, and thus help the car run on it'* own. With Fuel Injection, the car will start on it'* own, and any extra help will be futile, the car is not going to start any different at 1k rpm for 2 sec, than 200-300rpm for 5 seconds. I'm not saying the car won't run on the starting fluid, but it isn't going to help start your FI car.

so it is intended to start the engine so that the mechanical fuel pump can get going good thus fueling the car. is that about right?

To a FI car? No. To a carbbed? No.

Just don't run the car off the stuff for longer than it 5 sec. After that, chances are your car isn't going to start.
