RPM question

What should the RPM gauge be at between 70- 75 mph?

big_boss2010 05-09-2004 10:22 PM

not for sure i think bout 4500? never looked

ssesc93 05-09-2004 10:22 PM

my car is around 2000. i dont know about yours though.

PontiacDad 05-09-2004 10:23 PM

I would guess between 3500-4000rpm at 70mph.
Thats assumeing you were in over drive?

big_boss2010 05-09-2004 10:24 PM

yeah are you running in over drive

SSE14U24ME 05-09-2004 10:27 PM

I am always in overdrive cuz everything is highway. My car runs abaout 2500 rpms and wanted to make sure it was about right.

big_boss2010 05-09-2004 10:30 PM

like i said not for sure on yours but mine runs about 4000-4500

SSE14U24ME 05-09-2004 10:33 PM

isn't 5000 like redlining it? I was always told not to let mine hit 5000

big_boss2010 05-09-2004 10:42 PM

i dont think that is redlining on mine.

fuddyduddy121 05-09-2004 11:58 PM

Somewhere around 2400, I believe. Anything much higher is a problem with your transmission.

OOPSY, mine runs about 3500. That is pretty much more than 2500, I take it, that ain't good?

big_boss2010 05-10-2004 01:05 AM

im not for sure i think they all run different

94 SSE with Sizzle 05-10-2004 01:07 AM

:) Yea, I think so too, at least I hope so.

big_boss2010 05-10-2004 01:08 AM

me too 8)

Twister97 05-10-2004 01:22 AM

Ill cruise around 1000-2500 rpms on the interstate. depends whats going on in my car

Rogue 05-10-2004 08:38 AM

cruise (ie maintaining speed) at 72 should be around 1900 rpm for a series II, not sure about your series though.

Jim W 05-10-2004 08:54 AM

RPM is dictated by the transmission gearing ratio. We need the RPO code of your SSE to properly determine what gearing. In my 89 70 mph (115 kph or so) it was about 1800-2000 in OD.

However in my high geared Aurora its nearing 2500.

I have series 1. Where do I find the RPO code?

Look on the top of your spare tire cover in the trunk. You should see a sticker with a bunch codes on it. They dont say which is which so right em all down and post em and we can find your gearing.

SSE14U24ME 05-10-2004 11:00 AM

ok there were a whole bunch of stuff so here it is:

AAA, A24, PF4, C97, D55, VH9, ME9, NA5, 15I, US7, ZU1, B18, Y85, AU1, FE2, AL7, PB4, YGW, MXO, 15D, 159, UX1, B51, 848, Y98, 828, FCT, R6U, IFD, UK3, VQ6, T82, V73, 4OU, VO8, 92C, B53, 7HN, C68, GX3, CD2, LN3, R92, JM4, UQ1, VX5, V41, WEN, 6HN, 82C, B57, CE4, K68.

I don't know what it all means but I think I have a BINGO in there somewhere. I hope I got them right. I appreciate your help.

Jim W 05-10-2004 11:20 AM

Impressive list

http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/techinfo/?article=54 RPO code list for ya

randman1 05-10-2004 11:22 AM

My tach reads about 2100 RPM @ 70mph. My final drive ratio as indicated by RPO codes is 3.33 (GX3). Yours sounds right to me.

Jim W 05-10-2004 11:23 AM

You lucky bugger

GX3 - ratio, transaxle, final drive 3.33

 yer tranny is VERY high geared so your revs will be high at high speeds...very good!!!

And for the record you dont have a Series 1 that started in 92, you have a LN3 3800 not the L27 (series 1)

Thanks Jim but I am a damsel in distress and need a little help still. I looked at the list and don't know how that tells me what the RPO code is.

Jim W 05-10-2004 11:29 AM

RPO coding is the factory standard and options package that your car has. You have a GX3 RPO for the tranny. Its higher geared (higher then the SSEi) thats why you rev higher then normal at higher speeds.

SSE14U24ME 05-10-2004 11:31 AM

cool! I knew she could fly. Thanks guys for the help!!!

BonneMeMN 05-10-2004 12:08 PM

Gearing doesn't mean higher rev's at higher speeds. It just changes where the shift points are, so some speeds have higher RPM while so are lower.

rrounds 05-10-2004 12:11 PM

i have a 2000 SSEI and the top speed in
1st is 52 mph at 5500 rpm
2nd is 98 mph at 5800 rpm
3rd is 126 mph at 4750 rpm
4th ?
74 mph is 2000 rpm in my car.
my car has a stock pcm.

94SSEgold 05-10-2004 12:34 PM

UX1 says radio, am/fm stereo, weather, cassette, eq, etr, incls clock, what is the weather part of it???

What mods do you have? 3rd gear is limited to 109 at WOT in a stock 00 PCM. 4th is limited to 128.

Kennginn 05-10-2004 02:39 PM

mines at 2000 rpms in overdrive

A24 isn't on the list guys... and GX3 means you have a 3.33 final

FR2 - ratio, transaxle, final drive 2.93
FW2 - ratio, transaxle, final drive 3.06 <this one rocks
F17 - ratio, transaxle, final drive 2.84
F79 - ratio, transaxle, final drive 2.97
GX3 - ratio, transaxle, final drive 3.33

rrounds 05-10-2004 04:03 PM

when the transmission is in third at WOT but the gear selector is in drive
my stock pcm doesn't have the 108mph speed limiter
but if my gear selector is in third i do have a 108mph speed limiter
go figure..
3" cat back exhaust, 3.33" pulley,k&n filter in the stock air box
and for my 1/4 mile times, the gear selector is in 2nd. i go through
the lights at 96mph in 2nd gear.

How sure of these shift points are you? A Stock 00 PCM shift points are

1-2 5350
2-3 5350
3-4 4400

with a rev-limiter of 5950

What was your 60' time on your 1/4 run?

rrounds 05-10-2004 07:30 PM

best 60' time of 2.138
worst time of 3.893
1st and 2nd gear shift points actron 9145 super scanner
3rd gear by the car tach.
Rod.

MarkFahey 05-10-2004 09:57 PM

2500 is pretty high. The final drive ratio and your tires determine the rpm but in general, our cars run about 36mph/1000rpm so you should be around 2000.
Start from a stop and you should see the 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts with the torque converter locking at about 45 once you are in 4th and moderately accelerating.
It is also possible that the tach is off.
Oops, didn't realize there was a 2nd page and since you have the higher axle ratio, your number is probably about right.
