Rim Temps w/ Aftermarket brakes
 

We installed my 00 SSEi 17" rims on the Aurora today (looks decent, but its a work in progress) More importantly.

After following Petes dad and mom in their C5 Vette (50th :shock: ) I noticed that my new rims were really...I mean really hot.

Now, keep in mind, they disipated the heat quite well after 5 mins but that original temperature was staggering IMO. I have cross drilled and slotted rotors with Wagner ThermoStop pads. I wanted to ask the owners of the 00+ SSEi 17" chrome rims if they notice how hot the rims get.

I am concerned about the effect on the finish due to the heat. We checked all the offsets etc and its all OK. I get about 1/4" clearance from the caliper to the inside edge of the rim. Now these pads are brand new, so the depth of the ceramic pad its at its max. Any suggestions or comparitive experiences in this matter would be appreciated

Yes the Vette is nice, dirty fast too...anyhow, I do have to drive 3.5 hrs to get home tomorrow from Syracuse NY to Toronto ON, and this termperature thing is troubling.

I know jwikoff, Todd, TaylorD all have these high end stock rims and I need some brainstorming and sharing of experiences here.

I've had no appearent heat problems with my 02's. They are different rims, but with same type of construction, and I would think the swoopies would move more air over the brakes, being more fan-like. And I've got less than 1/4 inch clearence.

Maybe your Aurora has aerodynamic dead zones in the wheel wells and there is virtually no air flow.

Valid reasoning John. Peter and I considered the need of braking cooling, and I may look into this. However, for the time being, I think its the construction of the braking system itself. Performance brakes are hot. Even the backs got quite steamy (not literally)

Quit worrying, rims get hot, especially after tough manuvers. Which following a vette, i bet you did...

I think the rim's would have to get pretty dang hot to flake the finish...

I'd bet the heat is conducting itself through the area where your rims are held against the hats at the hub, maybe some kind of hard insulating material, say 1-2mm thick, used as a spacer? If it's like a hard ceramic it shouldn't break or compress or hurt anything and it might shield your rims from most of the heat.

I haven't noticed my rims getting too hot.....
jwikoff99 might be right, the 'rora might have some aerodynamic dead zones.

I get overly worried with my new chit...anyhow, got home, no problems. Once the caps are done then you can see more pics. Unless Peter scans the film pics we took yesterday.

Brake cooling would be nice if I go rig up a way to do it.
