Default Question for older/original Members

A Mark from Louisiana contacted me as he thought he was registered here in the early days and that we had a VIN database of Bonnevilles. He lost all his old paperwork during Hurricane Katrina and was trying to track down his Bonneville, a 1967 Convertible with the Gran Prix (hideaway headlights nose). A very rare car. I told him there was never such a database like that in the 5 years I've been here abd didn't know of such before I got here. Any of you old timers remember such?

I wasn't very active in the old days, but I do remember a VIN decoder popping up every now and then that would tell you how rare your car was based on factory options.

I think Pontiac Registry might track that, but last I checked, that site required paid memberships.

Nope, I did a search of his name, car, and present email and couldn't come up with a username either. Kinda waiting for a reply. You know me and my like of mysteries..... I fthere was an early VIN database, it must have benn separate of the Forum DB (like the old Tech Info was). If so it is lost. I was just wondering if anysuch thing existed here at one time.

I don't recall anything, but I would like the opportunity to look, which I don't have right now.

Nope, that'* has been kicked around here alot in the past, and still a nice reference tool. Probably what Z remembers but not what I'm looking For. Some Forums keep a VIN Database of members cars, more so for rare models. But I dont remember any such. I think perhaps he was on another similar Bonneville Site. There have been quite a few over the years.

I can find posts in the database almost that far back so it is pretty much 100% intact/complete. For whatever reason when Keotok (Jeff Keacher) upgraded the Forum to PHP2 on 06-05-2002, 01:15 PM, all posts before that date show as being posted on Dec 31, 1969. But even though the posting dates before that update are skewed the database remained intact.

Here'* Jeff'* post in this thread ( https://www.gmforum.com/general-gm-chat-88/forum-overhaul-184757/ )about the upgrade and that the upgrade caused some problems:

Forum Overhaul
Due to demand for features that I could not provide in the previous version of phpBB, I upgraded the site to phpBB2. Yes, there are some problems, most notably the ugly theme and the messed-up dates, but you can post polls now, along with some other cool stuff.

I appologize again for the server problems that I've had over the life of this site; hopefully all of the major bugs have been worked out now.

-Jeff

Well, either there never was a database here for VIN#, or it was separated like tech info was and destroyed as the rats left the ship.

It is obvious to me that there was at one time a registry, and I remember it now that I see the posts on it. I present the following evidence:

https://www.gmforum.com/general-gm-chat-88/registry-184546/
https://www.gmforum.com/forum-updates-suggestions-94/registry-operational-184547/
https://www.gmforum.com/forum-updates-suggestions-94/new-feature-attach-photos-your-registry-entry-184619/
https://www.gmforum.com/general-gm-chat-88/registry-184920/
https://www.gmforum.com/forum-updates-suggestions-94/registry-proof-read-187882/

I don't know if this helps, but I can do more digging in a while.

I believe there is an internet time machine website somewhere, that would be my next step.
