Default Well, I'm retarded....

I went to do a somewhat overdue tune-up to the bonne today. Needless to say it didn't go as planned. I bought an oil change and a fuel filter. I decided to do the fuel filter first. Once I was under there I took a look at the line and noticed it was nice and rusty. What did I do? Certainly not the smart thing and leave it alone. No! Instead I figured I could get it off. I mean hey, I paid for the filter right? The fitting was rusted to the line itself and rust was dropping into my eyes as I attempted to wrench it off. There I was, thinking it was coming off when a refreshing little geyser of fuel hit my face. Now I need a line too! I guess 2 years at a dealer taught me the wrong things. Like the mode of thinking that says "F**k it, I can get another one." Live and learn, right?

The way I've found to get around the fitting rusted to the line is to hold the fitting/line still, unhook the other (quick connect) end of the filter, then spin the filter and not the fitting. Worked for me on Morty'* very rusted 94 SE and my semi rusted line on the 97 SSEi.

Sorry to hear it went badly.

No, I tried that minus the quick-disconnect line. I never tried to get the fitting itself to move. It cracked under the stress of me trying to get the filter to budge. It was down the line about where it starts to make its first bend away from the filter.

EDIT: Thanx for the tip, though!

I didn't mean it was easy. I really concentrated on that fitting not moving at all. Somehow your fitting must have moved for the line to break, otherwise that line was in such bad shape it did you a favor by breaking when you were right there trying to see it through a fuel soaked eye.

It did in fact crack on me forward of the fitting, so I guess you guys are right. If it did crack on me, it was probably gonna anyway. Thanx for your sympathy.

BTW: I ordered one today from GM for $88
