Extremely bad oil leak on a 96 Bonny
I just joined the Bonneville Club Forum and have a few questions.
My 1996 Bonneville SE has a very bad oil leak. It coats the catalytic converter and that oil stinks as it is burned off. I have bought a new oil pan gasket and plan to replace it next w/e.
My question is, can or should I replace the rear main oil seal at the same time? Can I do it without pulling the transaxle? Is it a two piece unit?

I am talking about the rear main oil seal. It is at the rear of the engine and surrounds the crank. Sometimes it is a two piece unit that is easily replaceable and sometimes it is a single piece unit requiring the engine and transmission or transaxle to be seperated in order to replace it.
My question is what type is it? I don't think I will be removing the transaxle myself however.

Here'* what I could find...
1991-99 3.8L (VIN C, L and 1) Engine
ONE PIECE LIP-TYPE SEAL
See Figures 6, 7 and 8
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Raise and safely support the vehicle.
Remove the transaxle, as outlined in Section 7 of this manual.
Remove the flywheel, as outlined later in this section.
Confirm that the rear main seal is leaking.
WarningUse care when prying out the seal to avoid damage to the OD and chamfer of the crankshaft.
Insert a suitable prying tool through the dust lip at the angle shown in the accompanying figure. Pry the seal out by moving the handle of the tool toward the end of the crankshaft pilot. Repeat the process, as required, around the seal until it is removed.
