Broke my heart
...when I heard the news at work yesterday afternoon. A gentleman called me and mentioned that he had a sad story and began his tale. He told me that his car had been rear-ended and sandwiched into the car ahead of him. His car, you ask? A '93 SSE. My heart immediately dropped when he mentioned that. He said that the only thing that basically saved his wife and kid was the hitch that he had on the back end. It had stopped enough of the force to save the end from folding like an accordion. And he wasn't even hit dead center, it was nailed on the right side when the girl decided to attempt to swerve into the right lane before she hit.
I started telling him that I, too, was a fellow 'Ville owner and he immediately recommended that I get a hitch put on the back in order to save me from getting rear-ended and totalled out. Unfortunately, I'd already looked into it and I'm unable to do that because my '91 sits too low to the ground for that to be possible. Ah well, I wouldn't be needing it much anyways.
So, that'* my story of woe at good ole UHaul. It'* still a tough situation to go through, he said himself that he wished it hadn't gone that way and lost the 'Ville. Another one bites the dust.....

While it'* a bad story, he and his family walking away is the positive side of it.
I'm not sure the hitch was the redeeming factor of the car. These are good sturdy cars to begin with and having taken a hitch off one, they really only bolt up to the bumper supports.

I think the hitch would act as sort of a bumper extension, because I remember on my Bonneville the actual bumper was a good foot and a half or 2 feet back from the back end of the car, so if nothing else a hitch would start stopping the force as soon as the car hit the back end of the car, instead of a couple feet into it.

Only thing it could really do is reinforce the two bumper supports. When force hits...it'* going through and using that tow hitch as a solid push bar.
