sometimes to force a downshift if i am going to pass somebody...but other than that no. The computer can shift faster than you, and at the correct shift point hands down. Plus, the car will shift up to a higher gear if you try to hold the gear anyway.

Nope. The Hydramatic transmissions really weren't designed to be shifted manually for performance, as the shifting manually is VERY delayed, therefore wasting precious time. The low gears are there only for low gear hill climbs, nothing else. Also, don't attempt to downshift it like a stick, the tranny will slam into the gear and cause damage. Believe me, I blew up the 4T60-E in my '94 Century doing that.

Why is this in Performance? This topic has nothing to do with modifying your car for performance.

nope, no reason to do so.

The computer knows where and when to do it for either best mileage or performance depending on where your foot is

(Speaking in general terms) Yes on SPECIFIC occasions, but only because the Honda automatic transmission control is fairly... stupid.

In particular I will lock it in 2 when I am in traffic at about 20mph, otherwise I'll get a lot of 2-3-2 hunting.

With the Bonneville, never.

sometimes, while racing, hold it in second on my old car.

Now that I have tuning software I can program the shift point at whatever RPM I want it at.

Or for descending down hills (for instance Pikes Peak) Signs say drive in first gear, I decided "Hey I don't need to" Got stopped half-way down for "hot brakes".
