Go read Here first.

Then here

Finally go here for the wrap up on the story.

If you don't want to read all the multiple pages of posts just read the first couple pages from the first two URL's then the last url.

Az, I read it ALL. HOLY SHIT! Everybody read it ALL. That was ALMOST funny, except that could have been MY car. They did right by firing that sunovabitch, but the dealer should at the very least purchase an extended warranty on the owner's behalf. I bet she could get an Attorney to take this one EASY.

Guys, learn a lesson from Azwed's post. This is exactly why I stay at the dealership while my car is being looked at....not that it goes there often, but it prevents the possibility of this kind of thing happening. Even a Pontiac Mech would be tempted with one of our Modded Bonnie's coming in.

Good post, Az.

Bonneville_blue 10-07-2002 08:28 PM

That is soooo awful. I never thought of anyone doing that! What an Idiot posting it and getting caught. He will have hard time getting another decent job i guarntee that!..

Azwed 10-07-2002 08:51 PM

I heard about it just a little while ago on my my MINI forum www.minicooperonline.com

DeathRat 10-07-2002 09:18 PM

I will tell you one thing though, if that happened at my dealership that mechanic might even get sued too!

willwren 10-07-2002 09:53 PM

The dealership should extend her warranty, then sue the mechanic for the same amount, plus damages. They just got seriously blackballed by him.

SSEi95 10-07-2002 10:37 PM

I would be tempted to drive it like that too, BUT I WOULDN'T! Someone loves their car enough to get it checked out at the slight inclination of a problem and then someone goes and f's with it. Just not right.

I trust my mechanics. Our family has been going there for 20 years. I've sat in the back with them while they work on my car sometimes, I've looked thru their computer systems myself, and I've taken joyrides with them to see if my car was performing better (even before it was paid for). I trust them with my car. I know they will let it lose to find out what's going on and that's it. No joy riding. They have their own cars for that (classic stang).

A local owned shop will usually do better than a dealer, or so my experience has gone. Just my 2 cents...

complinitor 10-08-2002 07:56 AM

This is the EXACT reason that my cars do not go to anyone for maintenance. I do it unless it has to go on a lift (that's coming in the next year or so, too). I have had too many nightmarish experiences with moron mechanics than I'd will ever post here.
One thing I do when I have to go to a shop is to act dumb....like I know nothing about cars at all. When they try to tell me I need a new exhaust system from the manifolds back and that it will cost me $1100.00, I call their bluff and nail them to the wall! This happened to me this past summer with the Cadillac. I went for the annual inspection and the guy said the muffler was loose and he wasn't passing it. I asked him if I could look at it on the lift and he said no. The system is hard-welded from the mainfolds back, so I knew this wasn't the case, and when I told him this, he slapped the sticker on and I was done. So was he...I reported the shop to the state police (who monitors all inspection shops). They shut the shop down.

willwren 10-08-2002 09:44 AM

Good work, Comp. These little episodes make me glad I don't have to have inspections in Oregon, nor do I have to deal with smog in California any more. I know eventually, every State will be doing these things, but things are still clean enough here that we don't. I'm gonna enjoy it for awhile longer.

SSEi95 10-08-2002 09:51 AM

We actually got rid of smog inspections here in Minnesota. They found that there were so few cars that failed it that the monwy would be better spent on other things to prevent pollution. (thanks to governor Jesse Ventura) The funny thing was that if a car came in a nd failed a test, the next 5 to 10 cars would fail as well. They had poor procedures for cleaning the testing equipment between cars. But anyways, that all doesn't matter here anymore!

amy_lynn 10-08-2002 10:05 AM

That's exactly why my mechanic is a guy I've known for 15 years in a small little shop. No dealerships for me when at all possible. I know stuff like that goes on in dealerships, but to post about it on the internet? How stupid could that guy be?

willwren 10-08-2002 10:10 AM

There WILL be times, however, when you'll need the dealer. The Bonnevilles are super high-tech.....when it comes to things like ABS/TRACTION, HUD, ELC, that kind of stuff, most mechanics aren't even going to want to look at it, much less touch it. Basic mechanical stuff, you're always better off going where you've built a level of trust.

As far as stupidity goes, I think the idiot answered your question
I would have liked to see the owner have at him for 5 minutes with a tourque wrench!

amy_lynn 10-08-2002 10:26 AM

Yup, my poor baby will be going to a dealership soon. I seriously hope that tech won't get to work at some other dealership where he will mess with other people's cars. But as many people there are that know what happened and as slammed as that dealership is getting I wouldn't think that would be a problem. :)

This brings up a good point. In many of the forums, I see posts looking for schematic diagrams on our cars. I would like a full set of these. Deathrat, can these be found in the dealer service manual? If so, I'll have to pick one up. I have a minor degree in electronic engineering and I'd like to see what I can do for us, electrically. I have spoken to a couple of people on the GP boards and they have quite a bit in the way of mods to PCMs..not just DHP stuff.

I do all my own diagnostics on my Bonneville. I have a full-blown ODB II code reader/active line monitor that I use when I run on Fridays or after work. I think with a little work and adjustments, I can start doing PCM mods. I have located a used PCM in a local junkyard for only $50.00, guaranteed to function. I am going to use it for test-programing and run it in my '98. If I am successful, I will be able to offer others on the board the same. It won't go as deep as DHP, but I can promise better gas milage, faster tranny response and a higher speed governor (mine's at 150mph). I will keep everyone posted as the work progresses.

willwren 10-08-2002 09:20 PM

I know Jeff has a full set for 1993. I'm waiting for him to die so I can have them.

pontiacfan1978 10-09-2002 12:48 AM

Yeah it isn't right that he did what he did, but what the worst thing was that he did the damage, posted it , and another member which was the owner of the car read what he posted, thats F...ED UP!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!

speedyguy 10-09-2002 11:27 AM

If that were my car I would call Vinny and sell the car. I would then have Vinny post on the same site that the fool had gone on a long trip. LOL

People don’t learn from words they learn from action. The idiot will get another job, but losing this one won’t solve the attitude. In this case that ugly black box in the vetts would come in handy. .....Yup I thought about it again and yes Vinny is the best solution for this situation.

Man thats close to horrific.

My Bonnie is currently in the body shop due to the recent accident I was in (its all explained in 1992-1999 forum), but thankfully I know the owner and some employees. The owner of the local body shop I go to used to work on my 70 Dodge Coronet and my dads Oldmobile and hes very good at it. I also know one of his employees well, he went to high school with me. Hell, I went in today chattin' with the boss on how my Bonnie was doing and he literally takes me way back into the shop and shows me all the parts hes been working on, points out what hes gonna do to it, and informs me on the physics of the whole unibody (yeah it was shifted in the crash). I mean, damn!, how nice and helpful is that?!

Now the scary thing is I gotta have my car sent straight across the street to get the wheels aligned and balanced. Well I've heard some "iffy" things from this brake and muffler shop across the street and for god sakes, I know if anything seems slightly wrong since my car was hit I will go annal! I had to drive my trashed Bonnie to and from work for a week before it got in the body shop, so I know how it was driving.

This whole "saga" has kinda freaked me out and made me paranoid, but in a good defensive way. :)
