NOW is the time.

Folks......this weekend, if you haven't done it already, get out and lube your power antennas and door seals. Don't forget the trunk and hood seals, either.

I made shaved ice this morning as my power antenna went down. This is very hard on the internal components.

A little shot of something in the lock cylinders, too.

What do you recommend using, Bill? Never thought of this but it makes a lot of sense.

A Silicone or Teflon light lubricant. Spray it on a rag and wipe it on all the rubber seals for the doors, trunk, and hood.

Spray it in the lock cylinders. Then hold a rag behind your antenna (to mask from overspray) and run some down your antenna (wipe this in with your fingers to fully coat it, run it up and down, do it again, etc).

damn good plan. It is supposed to be 30f by this weekend, right now we are at 50.

I've got a fixed mast antenna. Bolts right up from a '95 Grand Prix sedan. And it's black, so it's kinda snazzy and goes with the car. Solves the lube/breakage problem.

They still build up ice, though, and bend like crazy at speed. Not much you can do about it though.

I should do both vehicles this weekend, the Bonne and The Missus' MommyVan

Gumball 11-23-2005 03:39 PM

Ha ha. No power antenna in 2000+

vital49 11-23-2005 03:54 PM

No power antenna in mine either. I like it that way...one less thing to worry about failing on me.

I will lube my rubber, though! Thanks for the reminder... lol

Lightly oil that antenna anyway, then wipe it dry. It'll hold less moisture to freeze.

And don't put one of them WalMart cowboy antennae balls on it. Kinda makes the problem a little more noticeable....

Ryan 11-23-2005 05:49 PM

Pfft I *heart* my power antenna...:P

McGrath 11-23-2005 06:37 PM

Thanks for the tip, I will surely be doing this today/tonight even though it's already in the 20's.

BillBoost37 11-23-2005 06:53 PM

Ahhhh I'll roll out to the 50 degree garage later tonight and hook up Purply.

I haven't seen it in a real long time!!!!!

BillBoost37 11-23-2005 07:37 PM

You guys better watch out..

I'm gonna bean you with snowballs once I finish prepping the car.

Bill....standard silicone lubricant on hand. Any penetrant for the antenna?

willwren 11-23-2005 08:26 PM

Same lube on the antenna. Kinda liberal, then up down up down.

Then wipe it dry.

Foghorn 11-23-2005 10:05 PM

Now is not the time Bill...last week was the time!!!

But sage advice indeed, O lubed mine with silicone last weekend...up...down...up...down...up...

Cheers,

Archon 11-23-2005 10:43 PM

Great advice, especially for the weatherstripping. I've been using silicone on it every year since a few years back I had to pry the door open with a clawhammer during an ice storm. Haven't had a problem like that since.

BillBoost37 11-24-2005 07:40 AM

 Clawhammer?? On a car you like?

(runs downstairs to lube his stuff)

BillBoost37 11-24-2005 07:51 AM

Ahhhh I feel better.

Archon 11-24-2005 11:07 AM

Yeah...I had to get to work, and didn't have time to warm things up first. I was careful, though. I put a strip of rubber under the claw, and a block of wood under the hammer to protect the car. I could have used about 4 more arms to arrange everything, but it did pop open that way, and without any damage. I did promise myself that wouldn't happen again though so, every fall the weatherstripping gets lubed up with silicone grease. Oh, and to give you a sigh of relief...it wasn't a Bonneville...it was my Chrysler Concord (everyone's entitled to one mistake. ;) )

Twister97 11-24-2005 12:00 PM

Thats a good reminder, forgot all about that. Once the 4 inches of snow is gone from my car, I will do that
