poor gas mileage
im only getting about 20mpg at best...in fact its more like 16-17....i do have a pretty heavy foot, but is it really that heavy? i was under the impressions these engines got about 28-30 and at least better than 20...im not getting any codes, i was wondering if maybe my o2 sensor was messed up, but wouldnt it throw a code? i cant think of much of anything else that would cause poor mileage...any thoughts?

well see thats what i dont understand, it doesnt make sense that any of those components would be bad, because the car is running great, its very responsive, doesnt ever seem to be struggling to move...or maybe they are and im not fully aware of what the series 2 should feel like...whats the best way to check the cat? i know it involves hitting it maybe and where is the fuel filter, its just on the other side of the fuel pump isnt it? i havent been under there in a while....and how do i check the fuel pressure?

Bad O2 sensors don't always throw a code. They can just become really inaccurate...do you know when it was last replaced?
Is most of your driving city or highway? Your only going to see 30 mpg if you are driving all highway, I would think if your getting 20 mpg in the city with a heavy foot that would be perfectly normal.

give your car a tuneup (PCV valve, O2 sensor, new plugs/wires if they are old, fuel filter, air filter, check tire pressure, run some fuel injector cleaner). That should set you straight.

besides, when we're paying for our own gas I think we want to get the best possible. I'm pretty sure if I drove my mom'* exploder most of the time too I couldn't care less about gas mileage either because mom is paying for it. I just happen to put a *little* (A LOT) more than 200 miles on my own car a month.

If you have access to a scan tool, check the O2 sensor. As well, check the cat. It sounds like you are running rich, which will make you responsive as long as the cat isn't dead yet and hasn't plugged up.
I too drive with a slighty heavy foot (Randman and Cfoote...it'* only slightly..wimps) and I have SC'd. I'm averaging about 20-25 mpg. Your car should do about the same unless everytime you put your foot on the pedal it is to the floor.
I'd start with the O2 sensor and maybe tune up if you haven't done one recently.

BTW if he gets 20mpg maybe he likes to dig into the throttle once in a while?? I know i like to. I got 24 on the way to carlisle even with A/C on going 90mph.
