My Poor Tires! * with pics *
The BF Goody's I got in November are destroyed up front. I came out of the house to find my friend and his dad looking at my tires laughing. I was like whats going on? They where like, " do you have any idea what you did to you're tires?" I looked and :eek!: Chunks of rubber where all over my wheel well and splashed up on my car like road spay. The tread, well over half gone. At that track I erased a good 10,000 miles of tread wear!! There goes another $500 down the shi**er.
Another one bits the dust do do do. |
Sounds like my tires except I royally f'd them up in 8k miles (damn alignment)
|
Pics please!
|
I wouldn't be buying those again. But look again, and make sure it's actually YOUR rubber. Most cars that go to a prepped track get sticky VHT and other people's rubber on their car. All of us at Woodburn did last year.
|
Allmachtige's 98 looked like it had rhinolining on the rocker panels because he spun it so much on the passenger side.
BFG's are great tires normally, they lasted a LONG time on our GMC (even after plenty of real offroading) from the abuse. Or change ur driving habits. And ROTATE your tires. |
the BFG's on our car are awsome...
Much better than the Michelins |
i cant rotate my tires i found out today, i have locking lug nuts..... :explode:
what do you suggest i do? |

Take them to a tire shop. They'll remove them with a special tool in an impact wrench, or dig in your trunk for the key. I have mine, but don't use it. I removed the locking lugs.
Be careful rotating tires, especially if you have directional tread ;) |
factory GM locking lug nuts are easy...take a set of Craftsman (brand name matters you will soon find out why) 12 pt millimetric sockets out to the car...usually 18-21 mm is all you need, next take a hammer (hand held kind) and find what size socket almost slides over but doesnt quite slide over the locking nut, hammer it on and take er off...then take the socket with lock lug attached to the nearest vice and pound lock nut out with hammer and screw driver, if vice is not available then set the socket on the ground and hit it square on the side as hard as you can, this causes the socket to shoot the locknut out the side so be carefull. Now the important part is they are craftsman cause there is a good possibility you will crack the f*ck out of the socket...simply return to local Sears store for exchange and continue. Or you can take it to a Sears Auto Center and pay them 5 bucks a wheel and they will do the above while you drink cofee and read a magazine.......trust me thats exactly the way we do it at SAC....the tools you can buy are about worthless on most GMs

We'll just let the smiley do the talking. The ranting and raving smiley. |
Guys, you realize that more than 75% of the rubber you bring home from the track is from other people's drag slicks, right?
|
Ditch the locking lugs (unless you got some bling bling going on). Mine started rounding.. Got rid of them that day. I think I showed Nate some of them. It got annoying having to get the key anytime it was worked on near the wheels too.

Ya Jason you showed me that one.....I really don't car for them....Don't need'em in MN...No ones gonna steal your rims. Unless like Jason said...If you got some bling.....But even then the chances aren't that high. |

Another one bits the dust do do do. Get a set of those, and then buy some el-cheap steel wheels and put some good drag radials on 'em. If you go with a smaller profile on the same 16" wheel, you can drop a little off your 1/4 as well, old trick (you'll also have to pull your ABS fuse while you have the draggers on.). |

My dad has the Falken Ziex ZE-512's on his Turbo GP, his were $360 mounted/balanced for his 245/50/16's, so you can find a pretty good deal on them as was already said. They also have a pretty aggressive tread pattern. They are good on dry pavement (the car won't even break the tires loose unless you brake torque it), and are really good on rain/snow as well. They actually seem stickier than the P Zero Nero's IMO...we have those on the SSEi and for a performance tire, they really aren't that great IMO. They stick good and everything, but not that good, and they seem to have a lot of sidewall flex. Don't get me wrong, they are nice tires, there are just better tires out there for the $ IMO. I have Bridgestone Potenza G009's on my STE an they were pretty much the same price as the Falkens for a 225/60/16 and they also have good dry traction and good wet traction, although I don't know about what they do in the snow, and I probably won't find out. They also have an aggressive tread pattern. They are MUCH stickier than the RSA's I had on it before. Start looking around for tires before putting exactly what is already on it back on.
I know what you mean about the tires though. I am on my 3rd set for the STE, although I bought good ones this time so I tried to take it easy on them as much as I could. I've put about 2k on them and the rears look brand new...I did a couple nice burnouts so the fronts have about 80% tread left, but I probably won't be doing many of those anymore. Going to the track puts a LOT of wear and tear on your car. This is why for a daily driver its not recommended except occasionally. Shawn |
The thing about the PZeroNeros is they ARE better than the ZE-512s, IF you get them in a low profile on a Civic. They use an ultra-soft, quick-wearing compound for grip. They're also really more of a small-car-oriented tire. The Falkens on the other hand are just a very well designed tire. They didn't use an ultra soft compound to get grip. And the design of the sidewall is slightly different according to height, so you don't have to worry about squirm with bigger tires or a heavy car.
I don't know how Falken managed to put out such a great tire without having to charge a freakin' arm and a leg, but they did, and I won't quibble with the price. I'll just enjoy beating the tar out of the local rice without worrying about expensive-a$$ tires. :D |
Before you go replacing your BFGs, take a look at the Falken Ziex ZE-512. I got my 225/60R16 98V's for $408(all 4 tires) mounted and balanced, from Sears. You do have to special order them, but it's worth waiting a few days for these bad boys.Think about dry road performance just a hair off the P Zero Nero, and wet/icy performance as good as any snow tire, for the price of an economy tire. |

I hate my computer.
|
LMAO......HAAHHHAA
I'll get someone to delete them....hehehehe |
Yup, like Will stated -that's drag slicks melted, and spun up onto your rockers and wheel wells.
For tires I'd love to suggest Bridgestone Turanza LS-H's (or LS-V or Z's). I put new 235/60/16 Turanza's on my 1998 SSE one week before I sold it -they are spendy ($126 apiece from www.Tirerack.com), but I couldn't believe the ride (handling, traction (dry, wet, and icy), and cornering). https://www.tirerack.com/images/tire...sh_vz_1000.jpg |
Your tread is ok. You're not getting 1.x 60's on those anytime soon, but for spring thru fall you'll be more then ok.
You must not have seen my tires (i've since replaced the fronts).... |
look into getting an alignment if the outer edge is the only edge that looks like that....if the inside edge looks the same way then its 1 of 2 things you need to put some air in those tires....or you need to slow down a bit more for those corners......and ive said it before and ill say it again, Kuhmo KH-11s are the best kept secret in the tire industry, almost the exact same tread as the Michelin Pilot Primacy tire that comes on M5s but 1/4 the price.....But I dont suggest snow driving on them...so keep the BFGs for the white stuff.....BTW that Bridgestone tire that was in the previous post keep away from it if you plan on driving really aggressivly as they are proven to be not as effective in cornering (strictly from a sidewall firmness standpoint) than the BFG Tractions you have now. Ive done a ride and drive on the Dunlop SP A2 that Bridgestone LH and the Traction T/As and BOY could you tell a difference in the handling and stability between the 3 (BFG was best followed closely by the Dunlop which had better progressivity but didnt stick as well all out and that Bridgstone was all over the place in comparison)

thats weak!!! ive had worse!! pics are on here somewhere
|
I wouldn't worry about slicks till you're approacing low 13's or 12's.... If you even go that far.
You'll have to store them, drag them to the track as well.. etc.. |
My Goodyear Eagle GA's are more worn than your tires right now :x

When i replaced my tires, it was because the wire braiding was showing through and i kept stabbing myself while washing the wheel wells.
