Using RTV or GM Pipe Sealant with PTFE on Bolts
After 196000 miles I am getting the honor of replacing the Lower and Upper Intake Manifold gaskets. I believe these are the original gaskets so not too bad. My question is using an RTV or GM Pipe Sealant with PTFE on the Lower Intake Manifold Bolts. It was obvious that there was some kind of sealant on the bolts when I tore it down but after a call to the local dealership they said "NO" to anything on the bolts. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

IIRC the gasket should seal enough and you won't need to worry about putting anything on the bolts. Just make sure to get the newer style gasket that has the metal insert and use the proper torque when reinstalling.

If the lower intake o-rings are for the coolant elbows then yes I have two new elbows and o-rings for both. All parts are from the local GM dealer and the new style on the lower gaskets. I could have saved some money elsewhere but I really like the parts guys so as long as they are not $100'* more they'll get my business.

Voice of many experiences here. The gaskets do have a ring sealing them from the bolt. There is no seal on the bolt from the oil and coolant passages that they go into though. You most definately want to use a sealer. My preference and GM'* is a teflon sealant with PTFE so that it remains goopy and seals well to stop any oil or coolant from wicking up the bolts.
RTV ....I'd use it in a pinch.
On the coolant elbows and injector o-rings, lube them with oil or vasoline to help them slide into place.

Thanks for the help. Spent the day getting the car back together. Made sure I used some thread sealant with PTFE. All new intake manifold gaskets, coolant elbows, thermostat, air filter and spark plugs. Got it started and it ran a little rough at first. Found out I had two of the plug wires crossed. Silky smooth now. As long as no fluids leak out I'll be OK. Still going to run a radiator flush after a few miles to make sure it is good and clean inside. Good night,
