I think I heard in 05 that GM combined the Onstar and XM antenna'*. That'* the reason it looks different.

BTW, whomever'* SSEi that is.. That'* sharp..

Yes, all three years do have different looking antennas. If I'm not mistaken, in 2003 the XM radio is a first generation component and uses an antenna with two coax connections. One for the satellite signal and one for terrestrial. In 2004, the second generation XM radio was installed. This uses a single coax connection for both satellite and terrestrial. You'll probably note from pictures on eBay that some receivers have one antenna connector and some two. This was the difference. Now, in 2005 there was yet another change. The XM and OnStar antennas were combined into a single component and mounted on the roof. This is also the year that OnStar transitioned from analog/digital ready installations (in the Bonneville) to full dual mode technology, hence why there is an analog to digital upgrade for 2004 Bonneville OnStar systems.

If you have an '03, you will very likely need that year specific antenna as I believe it is still first generation.

Hope this helps a little bit anyway. Sorry, I don't have the part number off hand for an '03. Is it safe to assume you're installing the factory components?

Pearl...im talking about the ROOF mounted antenna....not the glass mounted one

and yes id be adding factory components, i want to get the correct roof antenna....none of the crash books have the XM antenna Part number listed

I'm going to share the shortened version of a very long, sad and depressing story. I'm not sure how far along you are with this but I have some info which may save you some a lot of grief and frustration. Hopefully you can achieve your goal and end up taking fewer Tylenol than I did!

You mentioned that the part number for the antenna isn’t listed in any of the references you checked. This doesn’t entirely surprise me. When I went about this little venture, my local dealer told me they were not able to look up some of the part numbers for *-Band components. They checked with GM and the response was some of these items are restricted and as such are not available. The dealer referred to GM Bulletin: “Exchange Program - Parts Restriction on Ordering XM Digital Radio Receiver - #03-08-44-022A”.

I don’t have the bulletin immediately on hand, however it basically outlines the process dealers need to follow when servicing *-Band radios (XM). Obtaining certain replacement parts must be done in conjunction with the GM Technical Assistance Centre. If the TAC concurs that a specific part needs replacement, they will order it and have it shipped to the dealer. By returning the faulty part, the dealer will avoid a significant non-return core charge.

I thought this may be a Canadian restriction since XM wasn’t permitted here until the 2006 model year. This led me to call a couple of dealerships in the US. They ultimately came up with the same information. When I called GM directly, they flat out told me that since it wasn’t in my car when it was built, I couldn’t add it. I was cautioned that if I try to and/or do install it my warranty MAY be void.

My next option (and not a very good one for reasons to become very apparent shortly) was an auto wrecker. As it happens, XM receivers also have a TheftLock feature. The FSM specifically cautions not to swap receivers between vehicles because it will activate the XM TheftLock. Here is an excerpt from the manual:

Digital Radio Receiver

The digital radio receiver utilizes class 2 serial data to determine if it is in the appropriate vehicle. Each time the digital radio receiver receives the "run" power mode message, it compares the VIN information received from a module which supplies VIN information on the class 2 serial data circuit. If a mis-match occurs, the radio display will indicate to the user the digital radio receiver is locked. The digital radio receiver cannot be unlocked, it must be replaced. The 2 scenarios able to cause this condition are:

1. A digital radio receiver is installed from another vehicle.
2. A module which supplies VIN information is replaced and not properly setup with the correct VIN information for that vehicle.

Having communicated with users on some other forums, it seems GM removed the ability to unlock a digital radio receiver with one of the Tech 2 software upgrades somewhere around early 2004.

Needless to say, this is really less than helpful! My local dealer can’t help me, GM (corporate) tells me to go away and after calling in the neighborhood of eighty autowreckers across the US I finally locate some parts that are of marginal, if any value.

So here’* how I pulled it off. Once I had the used receiver from the wrecker, I called my local dealer on a whim. I asked if they could check a part number for me, see if it was available and for how much. A few taps of the keyboard later and the parts rep says “It’* a receiver of some type. I can get it and it’* …”. I had him order one thinking that for sure, somewhere along the line it would get caught in the red tape of “restricted parts” and it wouldn’t actually show up. Much to my surprise, everything did in fact arrive. I installed the used bracket I obtained from the wrecker. I bought the antenna, coax cable, receiver and the connector housing for the vehicle side wiring harness new from the dealer for about $1,000.00 CDN.

I still had to purchase connector terminals (which were available from the dealer) and the other items to build the harness to install it in the vehicle.

It seems ridiculous to me that the dealer wasn’t able to look up and order the tuner, but when I called with the part number, they had no problem getting it. Expensive mind you, but ultimately I got what I wanted.

I did eventually find someone on the internet who says he can clear the XM TheftLock and VIN from the receivers for a small fee and return shipping. I’m reluctant to post his e-mail address though until I ask him if it’* okay. This would open the possibility of using receivers from wreckers though.
