Ignition Key Pricing

i only got one set of keys with my 93, and i figured i better get a copy before i lose em so I ran my ugly bum to walmart, they say they can only do the Door key, the ignition is dealer only. so i rang my local potiac dealer (Pete Mankins Pontiac) and told em what i wanted. the guy tells me that the blank is $70, and that they want $40 to cut it and "program the chip". that brings the total cost to $110 for a single ignition key. that's way over right? doesn't the key have a resistor in it? i'm about 95% sure it's just a resistor, and i know you can't program a resistor. so was this guy retarded? $110 is waaaaaaay high right?

lol, he could still be a retard, but yea.. you need to program it to your passlock module.

That's bullshit. I paid less than $20 at a local locksmith. He had the ignition key in stock. There are only 20 resistor pellets to choose from. Any reputable locksmith will have all of them.

My mom got my Bonny a Key for $27.00 at the dealership. I have the reciept in the glovebox. I think they looked up the information and programmed the chip in the key and then cut the key, all for $27 +change.

It really sucks when the dealerships try to rip people off.

Yup.. That dealership is full of it..... I had the ignition key and the door key made at the local pontiac dealership for $26 for both keys... The checked the resistance in my key and found the proper plug and cut the keys... They even had me make sure the ignition key would work before I paid for it.... It is about $20 give or take a few bucks for the ignition key... and thats for the Pass-Key II system....

I guess all of them are because the dealership I bought my 97 from said the same, similiar, high price for an ignition key. Bill, you said call a locksmith? Let me call now.

Are you talking about the key that has the resistor that you cannot see in the head of the key??? If so we used to make them at the hardware store we owend bot about 35$ and I even went out and "programed" the car for free. Pontiac is simple to program, Ford was a PITA adn dodge I don't remember.
BUT
if you are talking about a VATS key ( the one with the little resistor that you can see on one side of the key) we sold those for 15$ and there was no programmin involved.

The last I remember, to program pontiacs, you put in a good programmed key, turn it to the on position ( or maybe have to start the car) then take out the "good" key, and within 5 seconds place the "new" key in the ignition and place it to the on position but do not try to start it. You should see the security light go on then off after a few seconds.

THat is it. Your key is now programmed. Basically you are programming the car to the key no the key to the car. And if I remember correctly after programming about 10 key sor so, the box in the car has to be changed.

Hope that helps.

BTW that was on a pontiac montana.

I have heard $50 USD...found it a bit spendy. Good thing the Rora came with key FOB 1 and 2.

Good times 8)

Anymore then $50-$70 is to much
