Bonneville SPECIAL. It has a totally different lineage than the Star Chief/Bonneville.

Wow.... imagine if Ponitac had actually made that car, and named it "Bonneville".
The name Bonneville would be more popular then Corvette.....

Now I know what you're thinking... that'* a pretty bold statement....
But... look at the facts...

The Corvette came out in 1953.
The prototype Bonneville was dated 1954, obviously Chevy and Ponitac were thinking the same things at this point. However, the '53 Corvette only made 150hp from it'* V6. Now that was beefed up in 1955 witha V8 that put out 195hp.
The Bonneville prototype was a V8 with..... drum roll... 230hp.

Now... if you can imagine.... 1955... a 195hp Corvette lined up against a 230hp two seater Bonneville..... who would you place your money on?

It'* really a shame.... however.... that said... the cars we call "Bonnevilles" now would be called something else.... and we'd all be drooling over the "Bonneville" as it raced against Dodge Vipers and other super cars.

....... actually the namesake "Bonneville" would be better suited for a "supercar".... since it takes it'* name from the famous Bonneville Salt Flats.... rather then giving it to a performance luxury sedan..... but that'* what GM decided to do..... (ducks and covers)

I agree, however the motor GM used in the 53 Corvette was a "Blue Flame" straight 6, not a V6... I think Pontiac probably would have out paced the Corvette for a few years until 1956 when Zora Duntoff took over production. In 1957 Zora started making more preformance changes in Corvette. 57 was the first year for fuel injection (real fuel injection for performance not emissions and mileage like we have today). The possibilities over what changes would have been made if are endless. I wonder if that'* why the Bonneville wasn't marketed as a sports car, they didn't want to challange GM'* number one sports car the Corvette? It would have been interesting to see competing 1963 cars.... A V8 Bonneville vs. a 327 Corvette feulie...
