Default Looking for a Bonneville....

Well I am new here. I am looking for a new daily ride. I love the design of the Bonneville and the 3.8 can not really be beat. Well any pointers on what to look for when I am looking at used Bonnevilles? Any common areas of problems? I am looking at a 95+, I think I like the SSE, SSEI and the SLE. I have found a few 95-98 for $3k or less which is where my buget is. The cars have 110-160k on them, is this a concern?

Welcome to Bonneville Club, Sal. IMO, the biggest concerns would be to make sure the engine runs quietly and has good oil pressure. Test drive it long enough to get it good and hot, and check the oil pressure at idle. Should be at least 40 psi. If you are looking at the non-supercharged Series II (L36) 95-05 SE, SSE, SLE, you need to read Techinfo article 38. http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...e=article&k=38 Check the UIM date and the repair history. I would strongly recommend performing preventive maintenance on any 3800 by changing the lower intake manifold gaskets to the new aluminum frame type, and flushing the cooling system to replace Dex-cool with "mixes with any type" coolant. In addition, for the L36, I would recommend the installation of a heat shield in the plastic UIM and a reduced diameter EGR stovepipe as preventive maintenance. Finally, I would recommend a separate after-market transmission cooler to keep the tranny cool and happy. If you pick a good one to start with, and make those improvements, you can reasonably expect another 100K miles without major engine problems.

I would love a Supercharged one but I have yet to see one around here let alone around $3k. Thank you for the great info. You think I should flush the coolant and add "mix with any type" coolant not get the Dex Cool?
