HUD Windshield vs NON-HUD Windshield

These photos turned out great and shows the difference.

The HUD Winshields usually cost anywhere from $400-$700 give or take depending on the brand/quality of glass. Ocassionally they can be had for cheaper, but they are usually in that price range.

A non-HUD windshield runs $150-$250. Less than half as much usually.

In case anyone was wondering about the "double image" that is sometimes mentioned, here it is:

Apparently it varies greatly by state. If I was able to get a HUD windshield for that price I'd jump on it. However I was thinking about it for the 98 and the cheapest I found was $500. I talked to 5 shops or so.

I have a receipt from the previous owner....for the 93's HUD windshield and it was $832 installed.

In the daytime the double image is not as noticeable compared to at night.

Same here. Hans' 2nd picture is actually messin with my eyes. Guess that answers the question of which I'm going to get when I need to replace it.

My windshield is extremely battered with nicks. I want a new one really bad. And when I get it, I'll be double-checking to make sure whoever installs it gets the right one first.

Thanks for putting this argument to rest, guys. Having experienced the image in Badnit's picture first hand, I've been a proponent of installing HUD glass when you have a HUD. There's the proof.

You can't see the double image in Hans' second pick? It jumps right out at me...maybe I'm more sensitive to it, but even in daylight it drove me crazy. Need to reference this thread next time the question comes up - and it will.

When you get your windshield changed, make it absolutely clear to the installer that you want a HUD glass. That way, when he installs the wrong glass you can take it right back like I did. And be sure to check it in the dark...it's much more prominent. When you look at it in the daylight it just looks a little blurry, like you got something in your eye.

I was wondering if I had a HUD windshield or not, because even with the dimming that takes place when the lights are on, I can barely see my HUD on a bright day with the brightness on high. On the other hand, it's as bright as I want it with the dimming all the way down at night.

The HUD I had on my '97 GTP, I don't recall having to ever adjust it once I set it.

But based on the pictures above, I guess I do have the right windshield. I don't see much double-vision at all, especially compared to the night picture.

I'm nearly bummed. I was kinda hoping it would crack, so I could get it replaced for free by the insurance company. If I've already got the right one though, it doesn't really matter.
