Howdy! lol. Broke my car again.

So hows everybody? Ive been overseas... not fight, but teaching welding.

So anyway its 2months in and 1month out. So I am home for my christmas and I wreck my car as soon as I get here..

I drove over (wheels on each side) a 4' wide curb and it bent my sub-frame? I think... I dont know. It didnt touch my engine, transaxle, steering components or suspension..

But where the engine mounts to the frame at the front I bent some metal back. It runs/drives fine. It doesnt seem like a big deal, but should I get it check it out professionaly anyway?

Hey Trofeo!! Welcome home!

Sounds like it's no big deal, but since it's up under the car, I'd find someone a whole lot more knowledgeable than me to look her over....

if the car has some major vibraitons i'd check it

Welcome back!! :D

Or you can wait until some concealed crack finishes it off at 60mph or so. :P

How would a collision shop fix that?
pull it back? weld in a new crossmember? box it for strenght?
This sucks. I hate icey roads!

Well, usually even for a bent frame, the insurance would usually call it totaled, then you can buy it back for $500 or so.

A shop would weld it, then do a strength test to certify it streetable again.

This is all assuming it's that bad. This is worse case scenario. I had a truck that was hit in the side and it bent the frame. Insurance called it totaled for a truck valued at about $4500.

In any case, I would have it looked at, as suggested above.

I wouldnt go through insurance anyway. (Im not sure if the wife cancled my insurance while I was gone  )
I dont think it looks that bad. There is a hole in the bottom side where you get at the motor mount bolts.

As you can see there are two pieces of metal sandwhiched together, all I did was bend the lighter metal back.. (hopefully)

I wouldn't worry about it too much judging by the pics......But if you want to get a new sub frame in there....It really isn't that hard to do.

LakevilleSSEi 12-22-2004 08:02 PM

You can get the parts from a wrecking yard...and fix it with a few hours of your time.

Ive got news for you guys... its ultra high strenght steel. The carful welding would take a few hours alone.
I called up my dad, and sense he has way more vehicle knowhow then I ever will. I sent him the pictures and he said" That there is your front cross member.... You must have been doing a fair Klick when you hit that curb. Dont worry about it, it looks o-k. You cant do anything about it, and if you could its a weast of time unless the length has changed due to pushing it back." The length doesnt look changed.
Now If I where to get into a small fender bender I could have a big problem. As for it cracking at 60mph.... I quess I'm going to have to believe that will never happen. Its not like that is my only engine mount, or the only thing keeping my wheels on. I'll just have to total it if that ever happens

I spose I could sell it at auction and import a mint trofeo from the states when I finish my 2year contract in hell...
