How can i determine year of L67 block

the engine in my park ave is from a 93 olds ninety-eight.( or so i was told.)

but after reading how the hb and the cps pulses are different between the 92 and 93s, im a little confused. heres why. when i originally got the engine in i had tried to use a 93 pcm, and prom, it didnt start. i also had a 92 ssei prom, so i tried it, and it started up first try. so that would lead me to believe that the engine is a 92. considering i didn't change the hb. is there any numbers on the block i can use to trace the exact year?

i have also heard mention of a slight difference in the heads between the 92 and 93. i think it was rocker arm bolts, or studs, not 100% sure though. is there something i can measure to help ID?

According to this:

You should be able to determine 92 versus 93 with number of knock sensors and the block casting number
(where exactly to find the casting number, you got me hanging  )

•1990-’92 VIN L
The 3.8L block was updated with a one-piece rear seal in ’90. The Buick Regal was the only application for this engine in ’90, but the new “EV-6” motor was used for all the FWD cars and vans including the Lumina APV, Pontiac Transport and Olds Silouette from ’91 through ’92. Look for a block with either a 25532674 or 25534243 casting number.

•1993-’94 VIN L OR VIN 1 SUPERCHARGED
The earlier “EV-6” block was revised in ’93. It had an additional pad on the driver’s side for the knock sensor and another bolt hole in the left front corner, just below the deck surface, for an accessory mount. It’s either a 24502134 or a 24502441 casting.

All Series 1's have only ONE knock sensor on the rear bank in an oil passage/gallery. Whether there's a SPOT for another I don't know, but all of them (L27 and L67 alike) only had one installed.

I would dig mine out and tell you, but I've wrapped and sealed it, and put it away.

Poke around this site:

http://www.mortec.com/location.htm

I know it's for V8s, but there might be some info for V6s. You might even want to email the admin to see if he can point you in the right direction.

Those are the Zilla's original motor, this is the new motor from a 95 Riv in there now:

93 blocks received a boss for a front knock sensor that the 93 L27 used. My 92 block has no boss under the front head for a knock sensor.

the crank sensor issue has me confused even more now. on rock auto, the hb from 91-93 are the same for the L67, and 94-95 are different. now for the L27s they are the same from 91-92, and 93 to 95 are the same. but im just going to leave that out of the equation. that will just make it more complicated.

i know the oe ks is in the rear of the engine, but there is also a hole threaded in the front of the block too. thats where i had the ks when i used the regal wiring harness when the engine was in my grand prix.

now bill, in your pics, am i looking for the casting numbers that i see on the bellhousing? is that what you are trying to show me? cuz if not, i dont see any thing different between the 2 blocks  .

i will check those block castings and use agrazela's post to help narrow it down.

thanks guys.

Wes, I'm just showing you WHERE the markings are.

thats what i thought, just wanted to make sure i wasn't missing anything you were trying to show. i dont have the same eagle eyes that Haro has with pics  . that boy is AMAZING with the detail he catches!

but i looked and dont see the numbers im looking for. all i could see were the "3800" casting, and something that said "B233". i will have to wait till i do my sc swap to get a better view.

but when i was out there, it had occurred to me that the original LIM was the walled one. were there any known 92s here that had that?

willwren 04-08-2008 05:10 PM

None. About half the 93's, and everything later are walled.
