Default question about cat vs. straight pipe and possible damage

I mentioned to a co-worker today that I was thinking of fabing a modular piece of straight pipe to swap with my cat at the track. He told me that I would burn my valves by not having proper backpressure. I just wanted to hear what some of you guys have to say about that. I know some of the guys in Canada run without one all the time, have any issues? I think he'* nuts but I'm really interested in what you guys have to say.

EDIT: maybe I should have put this in P&B

No, you won't burn your valves.

Yes, you will lose low end torque and hurt your launch and 60' times, which is where your car should excel at the track.

You don't have the mods or flow to benefit from it yet.

I ran for a short time (due to budget) with a 'race' pipe on my 95, and lost noticable off-the-line power.

Run a High-flow cat, or stay with the stocker.

I had a magnaflow installed last week by a friend who had one collecting dust in his shop. LUCKY me cost 30 bucks for his time and a case of beer.
