Got my Drivers License today!!!

Took my road test & passed it the first time easily, and then went straight from my road test to the secretary of state and got my drivers license. Don't have a car yet, but since we have an extra car (we have 5 drivers at my house including me, and 5 cars) I will have a car to drive when I need one. Anyways, I just thought I would post.

bonnie94ssei 10-16-2003 05:28 PM

:? Ok, I'm confused...you JUST got your license? I must have missed something

BonneMeMN 10-16-2003 05:28 PM

bonnie94ssei 10-16-2003 05:31 PM

For a long time, I thought he had his license, too. In fact, at first I thought those were his cars. I slowly but surely pieced it all together, though, heheh...

Congratts man, now drive safely! http://jm.g.free.fr/smileys/ylsuper.gif

That would be the 1990 Turbo Grand Prix (3.1L Turbo). Stock they are 205hp, 225tq. and run the 1/4 in 15.3 Seconds & 0-60 in 7.0 seconds...seeing that as of a few hours ago this one has a chip in it (to raise boost from the stock 7.5psi to 11.5psi among many many other things) it should be quicker than that. I am going to the dragstrip tommarow morning to find out. The best part is no matter how hard you nail the gas you can't break the tires loose because the turbo doesn't spool until ~20mph so it is really easy to launch. I did chirp them a bit coming home from school today. (I was in the right lane that ended at a light, next to an AWD Eclipse with a fart can and wing, and I figured, since some of those can be pretty quick (especially the turbo's), that I may actually have to try pretty hard to be able to move into the lane in front of this guy, but he took off really slow from the light while I was chirping & spooling away!)

Shawn

Yes, but the Turbo's also have 10" wide tires on them & since they are built for the turbo they have low compression pistons and all that stuff, so it would actually have less power with no turbo because of the fact that the engine was built for the turbo. But I don't know about what it would do now with the new chip, it is supposed to make it so you can easily roast the tires, but haven't tested that aspect of the chip out yet. I know the stock chip is programmed to not give enough power to spin the tires to save the drivetrain, because this is the same tranny as the N/A 3.1's got, only this one is having to handle another 65hp and at least as much more torque.

GAMEOVER 10-17-2003 10:09 PM

you could get a 5spd? but trannys in those werent the greatest

dbtk2 10-17-2003 10:16 PM

Not from the factory you couldn't. All of the turbo models were the equivelant of the 4t60 (whatever it was called at the time). You have to remember they made less than 3,000 of the turbo models in both '89 & '90, so with such a low production car, they can't give it tons of different options. The things only had 3 options. Leather, CD Player, and Sunroof. The 5 spd. can be put in the car, but it costs a few bills and requires different computer programming...not worth it IMO unless your tranny is shot.

BonneMeMN 10-18-2003 12:33 AM

Not worth it? You've grown up with autos, manuals make a world of difference. IMHO if you don't have a manual you dont have a sport car! Now muscle car? That's a different story...

But for racing, curvy roads my bonnie makes my left foot jealous. I can't imagine what it would be like with 5 or 6 gears... And having a clutch to rev at people!

I may have grown up with autos, but I know how to drive a manual, and I know that it is much more fun to drive a manual, and they CAN be quicker if driven properly, but it isn't worth it to me to convert it to a 5 speed when the tranny in it is perfectly fine (as far as I know). Now if the tranny were to quit, it would be a completely different story.

Here are the results from the track yesterday. (We didn't bring the SSEi)

The GTP ran a best of 12.59X @ 108.XX, and the Turbo GP ran a best of 15.042 @ 91.90. The nice part about driving the turbo is it was VERY consistant. I would nail the gas to spin the tires a little to clean them off before launching, and once I did that they wouldn't spin at all, or they would just chirp when I launched. Because of this I got to the 3rd round of bracket racing. I dialed in a 15.22 (because that is what it was consistantly running) and ran between 15.26 & 15.42 all 3 rounds...its just that on the 3rd round I redlighted with a .483 light. The car definately has gobs more power with the chip. I was hoping for a 14.99 out of it, but a 15.042 is pretty good. Good enough for me anyways. I do feel kind of embarrased driving around town with 15.22 on the window...but 15.22 is a pretty respectable time...its just when your dad is driving around town with 12.59 on the window it makes you feel slow.

Well congrats on the license Shawn and having a fun day at the track. Fun is what it's all about. Just drive save buddy. Can't believe your GTP is pulling mid 12's. So jelous! I wish my ssei was anywhere close to that fast.

Congrats on making it to the 3rd round of bracket racing too. With your turbo setup sounds like you can run way more consistant than any of the rest of us. How far did the GTP get in the brackets?

Couldn't have said it better.

Treat that Grand Prix well. My bet is that you'll have it into the mid 14's by the spring. Just don't forget about the Bonne.

Thanks...I could've gone to at least the 4th, but the stupid thing just wants to take off so bad (they tend to do that at 2500rpms) that it is hard to keep it there until the last yellow comes down.

The GTP made it to the 2nd round. The car runs consistant, my dad just has a tendancy to red-light since he sees the other car halfway down the track before he gets to go, so he almost always redlights in bracket racing. He broke out of the 2nd round from redlighting.

I will try. I am hoping for 14's at all in the spring at MGM5, but we will see. Hopefully some new rear spark plugs will do that. (we changed the fronts and not the rears because we didn't feel like it at the time because they are a PITA)

I am not forgetting about the Bonne, it is just that it has 88,000 miles, and it is a daily driver, and the tranny is starting to do weird things, we aren't going to beat it up much anymore, it needs to last at least another 88,000.

Thats what Zooomer said, and he is running low 11's.
