Goodbye Bonneville club...

I just found out this morning that my insurance company is going to total our '05 Bonneville GXP. The estimate initally came at $12k, but by the time they tear into it, the adjuster thinks it will be quite a bit more. July 5th would have marked the 1st anniversary of purchasing it. We are sorry to see it go, but it served us well, and protected my wife when she needed it most.

We are seriously considering an '06 Jeep GC SRT8. A local dealer has a black '05 Bonneville GXP, but it's a demo with 4k miles and $31k on the windshield. Plus, my wife says that she would feel safer in an SUV, so that's the way we're going to go.

Thanks again for all of the helpful advice, support and friendship that you have given us through this board. It has greatly enhanced our ownership experience! Good luck everyone and stay safe. :D

Sorry to se you leave but its best to have it totaled then to have it fixed if the damage is as bad as your described. What is the insurance company giving you for the car. I would assume somewhere around $25,000 would be right?

GXP Venom 06-20-2006 06:40 PM

Sad to hear your car was totaled, but from what youve posted I kinda figured it would go that way. Youve been a great member Greystone and I hope your bad luck wont keep you from staying in the Club ..... Hell some of our members own Fords.....well 1 member in particular Used to own a Ford untill recent events blew it up. Dont be a stranger man. I cant knock you on your choice- Good Luck!

For the record that was me who owned that ford that blew up  not my fault. But anyway like my buddy venom said not owning a bonne anymore shouldn't keep you from coming here nor owning a ford either but that's another story :) if you still decide you want to leave I wish you the best of luck wherever you may go and rerember this group of drunken idiots who still play with stuffed animals is only a mouse click away

Sorry to hear about your car, and I hope you can stick around. That GC sounds like a good choice. I was looking at one this weekend. Nice looking cars, especially with that big ole 6.1L Hemi. What a gas guzzler, though, 15MPG Hwy.

1999Daytona500PaceCar 06-21-2006 02:24 AM

Yeah, hate to see a nice car like your GXP get totaled - but best of luck with whatever you get next! I guess you could say that wel like everyone of the SRT vehicles as they are all pretty tough straight from the factory. The GC SRT-8 really stands out from just about everyone else's SUV for sure. Let us know what you end up getting & take care...

BillBoost37 06-21-2006 07:05 AM

I'm confused. If an accident proved a car to be extremely safe...why move into an SUV that's known to be easier than the car to roll and admittedly Dodges aren't the best rated in crash tests.

And yes..I consider Jeep to be a Dodge since they are the builder.

BLACK94SSEi 06-21-2006 08:53 AM

INSURANCE COMPANIES SUCK!!!

Sorry to hear of your loss. Glad your wife was okay after the accident. Future Good luck!!

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I'd go with another GXP since it proved to be safe and it protected her fine. (And at 31K it should be cheaper than the SRT-8 ). In the same type of crash, the Jeep wouldn't hold up as well IMO. While front crash test ratings are 5 star (Sebring and minivan I know of for sure) I don't know about side-impact.

Either way, sorry about the loss and good luck finding another vehicle. If it's the GXP come on back to BC! If it's the Jeep, well you're still welcome back! 8)

I would go for a 300C Srt8 if I were you but I am guessing rear wheel drive would be a concern for your wife. The Trailblazer SS is one hot suv as well.

Masterbm 06-21-2006 12:30 PM

I a sorry I agree with Billboost on this one,but do understand sometimes you got do what the woman wants and that is not bad suv. But the bville will better fuel mialge and from my experince are more fun to drive. Just becuase it bigger does not mean safer.
But glad to have you hear even if you do get the suv stay in the club.

GreystoneGXP 06-21-2006 04:16 PM

You all have asked some good questions.

First of all, although the Bonneville protected my wife well in the accident, she wants to be higher up off the ground. She saw the grill of the Ford F150 heading right toward her window at eye level, which gave her quite a mental shock (but fortunately, not a physical one). She thinks that setting up higher in an SUV will at least put her up on the same level of trucks and SUVs in an accident. That is her line of thinking anyway, and this will be her vehicle.

I know that the GC SRT8 will get bad gas mileage. Most of the ones driven daily are getting about 15 mpg city and highway mixed driving. Gas mileage isn't really a concern. But with the GC's handling, braking, performance and safety is a good compromise. Plus it has side and head curtain air bags which also help in the safety department.

Most of you probably don't know this, but I came to the Bonneville from an '04 GTO that also was totaled in an accident. I feel GC SRT8 is a great replacement for the Bonneville/GTO plus the extra utilitiy of an SUV.

SSsuperchargedEi 06-21-2006 04:27 PM

again, sorry to hear about the GXP... if you have any WK Grand Cherokee questions check out www.jeepsunlimited.com

fantastic88 06-21-2006 08:32 PM

Sorry about the GXP. As far as SUVs go i'd get a Trailblazer SS because it can tow 6500 lbs. The SRT8 for some odd reasaon can only tow something like 2000lbs.

VigCS 06-22-2006 12:26 AM

Very sorry about the car, but it protected you well.

Just because the car is gone doesn't mean you have to go!

I am just glad to hear that she is ok. You will love the Jeep. If towing is a concernn you dont have to get the SRT option (as I am sure you know) but the SRT=fun.

driverjohn2005 06-22-2006 02:57 AM

Did you ever gets pics. of the wrecked GXP?

GreystoneGXP 06-22-2006 09:03 AM

Thanks for asking me to stay, I'll probably lurk around for awhile. I still do on the LS1GTO board.

I have an '04 Dodge Dakota 4X4 with a 4.7L V8 that can tow up to 6800 lbs, so that will be my tow vehicle if I need one. The GC SRT8 towing is reduced because of the 1" lowered ride height, and the transmission/xfer case.

I have pictures of the wreck, and will post them if someone will give me some instructions.

To host the pics use Photobucket.com

These are directly from the nhsta.dot.gov website.

EDIT: Nevermind, can't get stupid photobucket to stop shrinking my picture. The 06' Grand Cherokee is rated better then the 05' Bonneville. I say get the Cherokee. Great choice!

Bonneville Ratings on top, Grand Cherokee on bottom.

yeah 2000 pounds sucks for a SUV....remember the typhoon and cyclone.
