GM "Chipped" Keys
 

Can anyone explain it please?

i heard Bonneville keys are "chipped" hows that? wheres the chip? can you cut any key or does it also have to be chipped?

and whats FOB key? i know its a dumb question

The "chip" is actually a small resistor at the shaft of the key, it looks like a black bump with some silver in the center. key goes in, resistor makes contact with the reader inside the ignition socket, reads the ohms of the resistor, if it matches then the car will start. no match , no start. So you cant get any key and expect it to work. You can however measure the ohms of the resistor "pellet" in your key, then buy a blank off ebay that has the same resistance as your key, when you get it, go have it cut and it should work.

That's true with PASSKEY II...but I'm not sure. For your Bonne, and any newer GM for the matter, it's in the "body" of the key. The little plastic grip part with the brand logo on it. It all works the same.

Fob keys are key and fob together.

if you get a key cut without it it will get you in the door, good for hidden keys, ones to start the car are dealer and have to be programed.

I find it funny my 01 Camaro still had the "two key" system. 1 door/trunk key, and one ignition key.

i think it depended more on the model redesigns, my 98 bonny has two, and the chip/resistor the 99 yukon has the resistor in the ign but one key. 03 monte has the transponder chip in the key

The transponder located inside the key (kind of like in the '03 Monte Carlo and the '00+ Bonnies, as mentioned) is known as PASS-Key III.
