Default 03 Bonneville Cabin Air Filter

I only have 48,000 miles on my 03 Bonneville. I bought it new. I thought I would check the cabin filter and see if I should change it. When I opened it up I found there was no filter and it appeared that there had never been a filter in the car. I asked the dealership about the filter and was told that that was a purchase option. That not all 03'* were equipped with a cabin filter. They could install one for around $175. Any suggestions? Do I even need one?

For $175 I would do without it.

rock auto has delco ones for 15. i think i would rather have one than suck crap into my evap/heater core. but once you have one you have to keep up on changing it or the trapped stuff can smell or slow air

I remember paying around $30 for my filter and assembly (you need both). $175 is outrageous.

found some really nice ones on ebay for about $30 shipped that are hypo allergenic. I have no allergies but I put one of those in my 05 Bonny.

I always thought that cabin air filters were just one of those standard things that come with a car, like a steering wheel. That changed about a month ago when I was servicing my buddies Jeep and discovered that his car did not have one either. Very interesting that it would be an OPTION for a car like a bonnie

Is there a plate in place when a cabin filter option is not purchased? I can't comprehend GM leaving a filter out without a plate preventing foreign materials from entering.

There is a screen on the windshield cowl panel that keeps out most materials. Can't have a plate over this opening since this is the source for outside air for the HVAC system.
