FYI on replacement fog lamp bulbs

I have been saying that that 893 (55w) series bulbs are direct replacements for the 880 (27w) series bulbs in the fog/driving lights. I have been using mine for over a year with what I thought was no problems. Wrong.

One of the bulbs burned out, so I bought a replacement set. While I was replacing the bulb, I got to looking at the lens. I thought there was a big bug smashed on the center of the lens. When I attempted to scrape it off, I realized that it was on the inside of the lens. It wasn't a bug but a spot where the lens had gotten too hot and started to melt. The other lens had a similar spot. The lenses are not ruined in any way, but I don't want them to get any worse.

I had looked at the lenses several times after installing the bulbs last summer and had not noticed anything. I guess it just took this long for the plastic to get hot enough. I went ahead and switched back to the stock 880 bulbs. They are nowhere near as bright, but I know they wont get hot.

One of the other members was talking about the Angel Eyes lamps, so I am going to look into those next.

I just thought I should give a little warning for anyone that has or is thinking about this switch. Take heed, especially if your driving lamp lenses are plastic instead of glass.

I had the same thing happen with my halogen backups. bubbles. Tiny bubbles!

I don't keep it in R for Race very long now ;)

I thought R stood for Run.

A couple of us are interested in the angel eyes actually...any info would be great. :D

Anyway, thanks for the heads up...especially since I am planning on changing mine soon.

FYI, all stock bonneville driving lights (fogs if you will) are plastic from 92 up. The 92-99 lamps, however, have more space between the bulb and the lens, and can successfully be upgraded to 55w. Dunnit. Worked great.

Till I replaced 'em with better lights, anyway. Lowlyfe, any bubbles in that sucker I sent you?

Aftermarket is the way to go. Jay is dead on.

It seems that you can get the Angel Eyes for about $55 plus shipping just about anywhere. I am curious about what mod's need to be made and also the lifespan of the lamps. The bulbs are cheap, but I wonder about the LED's in the rings.

Now my halogen backup lamps seem to be fine. Granted, I don't drive around all day in reverse. :D
