fuel gauge question
hey guys, i got a quick question, ive got a 93 bonneville ssei, and ive got a fuel problem, either im getting 12 mpg at 75mph in overdrive at 2100 rpms, or my fuel gauge is messed up, how would i go about fixing the fuel gauge, do i just give it to my mechanic and say fix it? and by any chance does anyone know how much it would cost to fix the fuel gauge? its not the dash gauge, that works fine, its the gauge in the tank thats messed up.

Good chance the sending unit is going bad. Typical.
Sending unit-$75-$300 Tank straps-$27 Hardware about $8 Might as well replace the fuel pump for good measure-$43-$368 Plus labor. About 2-3 hours of work do replace it. Prices are current at Rockauto.com |
wow ur are sure specific, thats very much appreciated, and yea i plan on changing my fuel pump bc i think thats the reason why if i push the supercharger over 4 pounds of boost the engine sputters im guessing because of the lack of fuel

Could also be a clogged fuel filter. Dirty MAF. Bad plugs.

well i did have the original fuel filter that came with the car, 170k later lol and i had it replaced, and just had the mass air flow sensor replaced a few months ago and had the wires and plugs replaced about 2 years ago and have maybe 18 k on them, so its deff gotta be the sending unit you said earlier, you think i could get away with a new sending unit and tank straps and hardware for 150$?

Just for the parts? Probably. But don't quote me on that. Other things can break while your taking things apart. I just quoted the major things I know you would need. This doesn't mean you won't break the clip off of a fuel line. Or do something to your filler neck when trying to remove it from the tank.
