final measure on F41 / FE1 springs

For all of you who have questioned what I have, I brought home a good set of starrett mics from work, and here's what I found out. Let me first say that the measurements varied slightly depending on where I took it, and were always smaller near the very top loop. All measurements are from a middle loop. Please tell me, if you can:

1)Are these correct for the car.
2)Since there are ranges for the different RPO's, am I stiff or soft (no jokes here, thank you.. my wife says I'm better than perfect!)

'93 FE1 - front: 15MM, 6HT rear: 15.5MM, RRW

'93 F41 - front:15.75MM CJB rear:16MM, tag missing

that "15.75" seems very odd, but I can't force either 15.5 or 16. That's what it is.

Please comment. Mike

Your numbers and abbreviations escape all logic. Or I need to sober up. Can you clarify what you're trying to express here?

i think that the front and rear diameters are reversed :?

And the 'force' must mean he expects them to be even half-mm increments?

I'd expect them to be 0.1mm differences accross a wide sample of cars.

i agree not sure why the word "force" is used.....maybe we need pics of the measurements?

let me clarify..

By "force" I mean that when taking a micrometer reading you can get a half-thousanth variation depending on how heavy a hand you have on the thumb screw, or whether there is a little dust there, etc... I design and build machinery for the company I work for, I know how to read a micrometer - my job depends on it! (Not trying to be sarcastic here, just wanting to assure everyone that I'm not flubbing the readings.)

Just in case I was dead tired last night, I went out again at high noon, well rested, well lighted, and measured again. Here's what I got, in inches and then converted to MM using 25.4 as the conversion factor. I stand by these...

Front, F41 car, measured in the middle of the spring. .619" (15.772MM). From past discussions, I thought the springs were in half-MM increments, so this is why I thought this to be a little odd... Thought it should be either 15.5 or 16.0 The tag on this spring is clearly CJB. I promise.

Rear, F41 car, measure in the middle of the sping. .629" (15.976MM) If I measure near the top or bottom of the spring, I get .547"(13.893MM). Obviously, the diameter of the spring tapers near the ends. The tag on the spring is long gone, but I can see where it was.

This is what it is, I look forward to everyone's comments, because you all have me wondering what is going on... Please reply. Thanks, Mike

Ummm....still interesting....the front springs should be thicker than the rears, or at least that was the impression that i was under...

This is going to get really confusing in a minute...

The front springsFor your FE1 are the softest FE1 setting, or lowest load rating for the FE1, The rear RRW Is the middle setting for the FE1 rear springs..

The CJB is the lowest load rating for the F41 front spring, The rear F41 could be RSF,RSE,RSD,RSC,RSB or RSA... Not sure which one... There are a totall of 3 load ratings from highest to lowest for these springs...

My 95 also has RRW springs in the rear as well I think my 91 does too...

It gets weirder...

The Front suspension springs for the front are at times grouped...

The rear springs FE2 and F41 are seperate, they are not grouped together...

The earlier years LE/SE with F41 and SSE with FE2 Front springs are grouped... But the rear FE2 and F41 were not... weird

I wonder how much of a diffrence the rear air struts on the FE2 suspension made... Keep in mind that the F41 did not use air struts in the rear... ;)

allright Im getting the tags off my springs right now for comparison

willwren 10-15-2005 12:40 PM

I think if we're going to classify spring diameters, we need multiple measurements on each spring, and all need to do it the same way. I'll take some new measurements of both of my cars and figure something out. May even plug them into a spreadsheet to calculate a 'spring factor' from 3 measurements per spring. That would give us a much clearer picture.
