Not that I endorce speeding...
a seperate topic split off from this thread: http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...=617934#617934
anyways, the return trip was interesting because it was the middle of the school semester, a major holiday weekend, and i needed to get back to school (I had missed several days on an emergency trip for a relative we thought wasnt going to make it, but as of this typing she is still around). So I leave FL in the morning i forget the exact time, take the back roads from Palatka to Jax, get on 95 north and gun it. Stop for gas somewhere near the GA/SC border... that added 10 minutes to the trip. Anyways for a holiday weekend, there was no traffic going north, only semis.
so i figure what the heck? i let her rip.
all the way from jacksonville to roanoke rapids NC, i am doing 95-100 MPH. and then it happens. 1 mile from the VA border, I see the one and only trooper the entire distance thus far. now since i dont have a radar detector, i was busted. on the ticket the officer actually did me a favor and said he clocked me at 94 mph in a 70 zone. Now if he had clocked me at 95 i heard there was a rumor you can be tried with speeding with intent to kill or something; regardless, i had a court date to go to several months later.
now i didnt speed the rest of the way home, but still i got home in 8 1/2 hours, a distance of about 750 miles one way. Normally this takes anywhere from 12-15 hours, pending upon traffic.
now having got the need for speed out of my system, i still had backwoods NC circuit court to go to (it being a small villiage, they have no dedicated traffic court). I lucked out again because it was my first (and only!) major offense, so the DA stated that if i pled guilty he would drop the wreckless from the charges.
Be that as it was, i still got a speeding fine of $200 + $100 court costs, a year of unsupervised parole, and liscense yanked in NC. But for awhile there, i didnt know if i'd be returning home to mama'* kitchen or bars of steel.
So you see why I got the need for speed burned out of me, and now i just do what the flow of traffic does, which is usually 5-10 over, at least here in central VA...
but there was a funny anecdote to the whole sordid affair.
after my sentencing, the judge thought a moment of levity was in order.
to the best of my memory he said: "Son, i've read the report and conferred with the officer and we agree you had a real slick handling of the vehicle. Now based on this plus the speed you were traveling, son I suggest that the next time you feel the need for speed, you look into North Carolina'* fine tradition of NASCAR motorsport. I think you'd be good at it son. But stay off of my highways with that rate of speed!"

I wish the trooper in NC was like that with me. He saved my butt for doing 95+ in a 55 with a 10 over, but never was suggested for NASCAR. The need for speed never leaves the blood, especially with a car so graceful at those speeds.
