I have had my 96 Olds. Achieva in the shop for a full diagnostics and they found it has a few bad lifters and they said in all reality it wouldn't be wroth it to fix it when you compare it to the value of the car so I am turning to yall to see if I should go with what they are saying and not fix it or just fix it myself but I am needing some good convincing to fix it. The car has some pretty good rust damage to the inner and outer rocker panels but it only has about 82k on it.

The Prices to fix the motor ( Taxes includes if I due it myself)

The heads check since they half to come off to due the job (right around $150.00 at a local machine shop)

Complete upper end gasket set with new head bolts ( right around $200.00)

Lifters from advance auto parts ( $194.00) they are the cheapest and the only ones that have the in stock.

Also right around another 80 bucks for Oil and Antifreeze, Also about $150 to a good friend to due the job since I am kinda afraid to due the job since it is allot newer then what I am use to doing.

So with what I said about would it be worth my time and money to fix it or should I just drive it till it drops. Thanks.

$700 to fix it. What is it worth if you sell it as-is? What is it worth if you fix it? You didn't mention costs to fix the rust.

to fix the rust repair it about 2,000 to fix it, that was the cheapest I could find going through Maaco to fix the rust. Also I only paid $750.00 for the car, but I also half to replace the front struts and that is gonna cost me about 300.00 dollars for ready mounts and I can due it myself, also it will need back tires and back brakes, drums and new brake hardware before to long so I am just needing to know if I should fix it or just drive it as is till it blows. Also if it would be a better idea to just keeping driving like it is with that noise due you think it will make it another three or four years till I can get out of College.

Over the next three or four years you will be putting $1,500 into a car that cost you $750, and that doesn't include fixing the rust. I would dump it and look for another in the same price range. Can you get anything for the car as it sits? If not, I would drive it until she blows.

I doubt it as loud as the lifter are, I would half to drive it for about a few hours and sell it when the motor is nice and hot because the longer you drive the lifter noise from the motor begins to die down but you can still hear a little lifter noise after you due that but it isn't as loud as it would be when you start it up.

Also due you think it would hurt if when I due my oil change to put an oil treatment and just keep putting an oil treatment in it every time I change the oil or would that due more harm the good. Also I was looking at adding Rislone to the next oil change because I heard it is a little better then the Lucas Oil treatment.

I am not a believer in additives in normal situations, but this is not normal. Try an additive with your next oil change and see if it quiets things down a little. If it works, keep doing it.

you try doing seafoam for the last week or two before changing the oil?

That'* a good suggestion. Seafoam just might free up a stuck lifter or two. Dump it in the oil, drive it for a week or two, change the oil.
