Default 180 vs 195 degree thermostat

I'm ordering parts and getting ready to do UIM and LIMs on the 96 SSE/L36.

I've seen a couple of posts that say to get the 180 thermostat because it is better. If I have a 195 and replace with a 180 will it screw up the computer and set an idiot light off? I thought it would be better to have a 180 for lower running temp, but I dunno fur sure...

Advice?

Every single car here will benefit from a 180. It'* also suggested that you drill at least one 1/32" hole in the rim. Some of us drill more.

I like having a 195 in the winter..car gets warmer slightly faster.

wren is correct, A 180 will help just about ever car here. The benefits list is huge compared to the disadvanages.

Someone mentioned the pros outweigh the cons, can someone maybe list those pros and cons for those of us that are considering a change from 195 to 180?! Thanks

There are no cons. Not even in the winter from my experience. Unless you're in a northern canada climate, don't worry about it.

What is a 'northern Canada climate"? Here I am 75 miles north of the 49 in the middle of the country [and the continent] and we have had -25C/13F every night for 21/2 weeks...Canada extends to the Arctic Circle and beyond. Where were we drawing the line on "northern"?

I don't like my drilled 180 in the winter. The engine takes forever to get warm, and the heat never feels as warm when it'* bitter cold out. Plus it sucks down a lot more gas when cold.
