Does HUD require a special windshield?
 

Can anyone tell me if the windshield on a 92' SSEi
it different then a standard non HUD car...?
any if anyone has replaced it and knows the cost?

Yes, it requires a different windshield. About twice the cost of a standard one. Otherwise you get 'ghosting' and a dim image. It'll seem out of focus. On the other hand, some auto glass shops can apply a liquid (that dries) optical coating on that area of a 'normal' windshild, that should perform nearly as well for alot cheaper.

I thought so....car i went and looked at tonight had a cracked windshield...(plus other things)
but the guy was trying to tell me it wasn't a different one.....

The windshield for the HUD begins it's 'difference' during the lamination process. An extra wedge-shaped layer is added during lamination. Thinner at the top, thicker at the bottom. This is the layer that reflects the VF image from the HUD back to you, and the reason for the price difference.

In general terms, a non-hud windshield could cost up to 600 bucks (OEM), where a HUD ws should be about twice that. Add another 200 if it's heated. My ws was $1400, but covered by my insurance.

Be careful about that car.

If you have a HUD, carry a low glass deductible. Most glass suppliers/shops will waive a 50-100 dollar deductible. I carry $50 just in case.

I passed on the car anyway....there were other issues with it...
but it was kinda a pissin' match between the seller and I...I said it
had a special windshield....he disagreed

Here in Rhode Island there is NO option for glass coverage at all....

so that is another reason I am not going for the SSEI with HUD...even tho its so f'n cool!

99% of the SSE and SSEi cars you'll find will have the HUD.

Low deductible on glass?

Never heard of being able to do that before, but definately looking into it on Monday... Here in Colorado, after it snows, there's a lot of rocks on the streets.
