Default Vent Valve Woes

Turn the car on at 5:30 pm tonight and I am greeted by the Service Vehicle Soon light – my worst nightmare come true. I drive to the dealer, they scan the code, and, after an hour of worrying about my baby, it turns out she has a worn out “vent valve” causing EVAP pressure loss. Apparently, this is what threw the code. They are going to order one for me and replace it in a few days. Has this happened to anyone else?

Do you always scan codes when the light comes on? Because once in a great while my SES lights comes on when I start the car, or whn I'm driving. I don't notice anything different with it. I stop the car and start it again and the light goes away. I just wonder if I do have a problem. I rarely get the SES light. :?

How much will this fix cost ya? Hopefully not much. Sorry to hear the bad news.

This is the first time it has happened to me. However, my first move is always to restart the car. (After all, it'* sorta like rebooting a computer.) This tries to eliminate the possibility of a false code. I emphasize "tries." After all, computers often make mistakes. But, after restarting twice and the SES light was still on it was time for a trip to the dealership. It is going to cost $100 Canadian to fix the valve. I am just thinking, it could have been a lot worse.

No, it is not an exhaust valve. It is a valve that controls the pressure in the fuel tank.

$100 Canadian = about $70 US.

No, you shouldn't worry too much if the light goes away. It essentially means that there wasn't really a problem. For instance, there might have been a problem for a split second that caused your car to throw the code but if you restart and it goes away there is almost always no need to worry.

Isn't that in the gas cap? It is on my 98 Z71. They replaced the cap, and the code went away. Long time ago, under warranty.

It does kinda sound like the gas cap, don't it? Used to be part of the MN Emissions test.

Alot of the time, and intermittent SES light would be an O2 sensor starting to go. At least that'* what it is on my Saturn. Time to get it replaced, as the light is staying on longer and longer, I'm losing gas mileage, and the cat stinks as if running rich...hehe..
