Grand Am headlights seem a bit taller?

BillBoost37 05-08-2005 03:17 PM

Allowing for the angle of the pic, I think he's right. They look very simliar if not identical.

I personally think they are different. The GA's look more square and taller...

i was noticing that they only did these types of headlights the first year the GA was made. i tthink they are the ones, because the angle on the grill is about right. i first thought they came from a century, but the angle didnt quite match up.

The Bonny lights have a chrome strip along the top. The GA's don't.

in the first pic though, the GA's whole assembly was chrome. it looks like thats the way it is with the bonneville too. just maybe the assembly sticks out a bit, exposing that finish.

I'be got an 85 Buick Somerset. Same lights. No strip.

but the angle of the grill is off though. those look like they could fit in a century. i just think that strip is a product of the assembly not fitting flushly in the car. also note, that the GA hood hangs over the assembly a bit too.

you know there is only one way to solve this...

any volunteers?

Doesn't it come down to a simple reasoning? Those look like sealed beam lights. They only made a couple different sizes. Or am I totally off?

J Wikoff 05-08-2005 10:23 PM

I'm positive the old GA and my Somerset have the same headlight assemblies. There is no strip hiding under the hood. It is very close, just a little different.

im talking more about the bracket that mounts the sealed beam. i know several people have wanted to do it, but just havent figured out where the brackets came from. while yes, the buick somerset does offer something of the sort, it just seems like <to me anyway> the angle of the bracket doesnt match up with the angle on the grill of the bonneville. same as the century. i first though they came from a century <86-87 or so> until i noticed the same thing, the angle of the grill mating surface. when i noticed that the GA has a very similiar if not exact grill angle <1986, the first year they made them.> as the 87-91 bonnevilles, thats where i get the idea of those lights coming from a GA.

J Wikoff 05-08-2005 10:42 PM

Upon further review, my Somerset does NOT have the same assemblies. My bad...

The chrome strip does in fact run all the way around, and the they do not meet the grill.

rjolly87 05-08-2005 11:18 PM

first off, just to be sure this is the somerset:

correct?

IMO, the headlights on these two beautys look exactly, save for the bonneville maybe being a little more rounded on the top, but anybody with a modding bug can fix that. the grand am front end stayed exactly the same from sealed beams to changeable lightbulb types, which simply involves just tweaking the mounting hardware a little bit.
