Meaning of the transmission name
I was doing some bonneville research in the Data system we use at school today, and I came across and explanation of the names of GM transmissions, so I figured I'd share it (didn't find anything in search that explained it, so...)
4T60E/4T65E
First digit represents the number of forward gears. 4=4 Gears
Second digit represents the drivetrain mounting. T=Transverse, L=Longitudinal
Third and fourth digits represent the rating of the transmission. 60= 600 nm of torque (but not for an extended period).
E represents electronic control.
And, since I know we have a couple ford people here, I'll break down one of theirs too.
4R70W
First digit=Same
Second Digit= R for RWD
70= 700 nm of torque
W=Wide ratio(3.22:1 1st gear ration before it hits the final drive).
Nothing important, just interesting information I thought I'd share.

I have the E4OD in my F150and my buddy has the AOD.
My Sable has the AXOD.
I think its dependant on who actually made the transmission for Ford.

Tim what year is that Sable.... I remember driving the AXOD and the AXODE.... They were a night and day difference..
And how about these transmissions..

Yep those Vulcan Motors are troopers...
And you have the AXODE... Its the better one by far...
The AXOD units used through mid 93 or mid 94 had a nasty habit of burning up or just failing...

You are saying the 60 is 600nm'*.. that makes the 65..probably 650nm'* which would mean that according to your data the 65 was designed stronger than the 60 per GM?

Thanks a lot for posting that. It'* really cool, and now I know just that much more about transmissions. Really, I learn something new every day when I'm on the forums. This is very cool.
As for the Sable chat, my mom has a 97 Sable with a 3.0L Duratec V6 (DOHC). Its transmission started slipping at 120K and was done by 130K. We swapped it out with another one, we've been having all sorts of vacuum leaks and O2 sensor failures. The entire O2 circuitry is busted to the point that no sensor works and always shows up bad. The IAC and MAF sensors went bad, and we replaced both. It chugs and smokes like it has a gasket failure (new UIM gaskets) until it warms up. Then, you can't see anything but the fumes burn your eyes. We left it at a Ford dealership, and they told us it would be over $600 to get the engine running right. I love my Bonneville.
